We also played Bristol City in the League Cup semi about 5 or 6 years back. We won both legs.

It was Torquay in the League cup not Exeter early 90s.

We have definitely played Bristol City at Ashton Gate because I've been there twice !

For quite a few years the main thing I knew about Bristol City was that we signed Gerry Gow from them.

Yeah, Gow made a difference to our team , he took no prisoners in tackles ...

I seem to recall going to Bristol City when they got promoted to the top flight .... we lost 1-0 to a Chris Garland goal ... around 1976, or 77ish .... it got a bit naughty after the game on the way back to the station.

And I went there again on a Friday night when we drew 2-2 ... I think Joe Royle scored for us, he might have got both.

I remember for the cup tie at Vale Park early 90s (?) It was said we had not played them in a competitive fixture. In the late 90s we played them several times at 2nd level. In 98 99 they were a division above us.

Was sent an article from the Guardian (yeah I know) that listed teams who had never played each other either in league games only, or in any domestic competition including the cups
They ranked them by the combined number of league seasons in their respective histories
It turns out that City v Exeter City is joint third on the all time list

• 217 Manchester United (123) v Gillingham (94), Manchester City (123) v Exeter City (94)

Top is Everton and West Brom, both v Rochdale (222 combined league seasons)

In terms of clubs who’ve never faced each other in league games only, City v Rochdale is joint 18th on the list at 217 seasons (City 122, Rochdale 95)

Top of this list is Everton v Walsall (231 combined seasons)

In fact we’ve only played Dale once ever in a competitive game, a League Cup tie in Sept 1972 (won 4-0)

Of course this doesn’t take into account clubs who we’ve never faced and which have only come into the league more recently, with the advent of promotion from the conference/national league. So the likes of Bromley, Harrogate, Crawley, Stevenage, Fleetwood etc

We’ve faced Barnet, Burton, Barrow, Accrington in cup ties

There are also teams that we have played but not very often - Bristol City being one that springs to mind

I have seen us play Bristol City 3 times recently and missed the away semi, we have played them loads.

When did we play Accy Stanley? Are you counting the lancashire FA Cup, Senior Cup or Youth Cup?

FA Cup 1936-37, we won 2-0 at Maine Road.

We'd played them four times in the league before the FA Cup game in 90-91. It was our first domestic cup tie against them.
