You ****. I'm Phil.Yes!
I’d been to Glastonbury and bought the NME on the way home (same day as England v Argentina “Hand Of God” match) and there was a piece announcing the gig and adding tickets went on sale on the Friday and this was now the Sunday!
I was at Piccadilly Records box office 9am Monday to be told it was sold out but I could try Salford Uni.
So I called director of enquiries from a phone box, got the number of the student union and called. Whoever answered said they had 3 tickets left and I gave my name and begged them not to sell to anyone else and I was on my way there immediately.
I get to the Student Union building and am told it’s sold out.
“But I called 20 mins ago and told you had a handful left”
“Sold out on Friday, sorry”
"But I called 20 mins ago which is why I came down"
“Honestly, we sold out on Friday”.
“If I were to call the student union, who answers the phone? Please call them and ask because they said they had tickets and were saving them for me”
(Student union person clearly half irritated picks the phone up)
“Yeah hi, got someone here saying there are tickets for The Smiths….. are you Phill?… (me nodding excitedly) you do…. Ok thanks….. they’ll be down in a minute….”
Is it called "The Kappa Years". Following Morrissey these days must be like City in the Ball/Clarke era. The harder it got, the more I went to games (I love The Smiths btw). Didn't manage York, but Bury on a Friday night, Tranmere, Macc etc mid-week if I recall.![]()
