VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

I wouldn’t, very tough to see any contact which wasn’t much anyway, from the refs position
Perhaps he was too close, must have been at least 3 yards away, not forgetting players possibly obscuring his view, (NONE !!).
Sorry its the usual. Basically refusing to make a decision, and assuming VAR will act as a safety net.

var awarded man city a penalty and disallowed a Liverpool goal yesterday?
Var didn’t disallow the goal. The Lino flagged did he not. Would have been disallowed regardless.

The pen. The ref knew it was a pen and in the old days he would have given it but they are scared to make these decisions now and rely on var to do the job for them.
Lool
At the way the ref does the exaggerated looking at it for a number of seconds. If he was sure it wasn’t then he would have waved and moved on straight away.

The reason it’s an obvious pen is the way doku goes down. It’s a natural movement when your tripped. In comparison the Brighton one is an obvious one because of his motion in falling.

Var can be good but it’s taken enjoyment out of the game. We end up talking too much about every action and there refs are shit scared to be allowed to actually get on with the game and make decisions.

It has good points but needs to be used less not more. We have to let the actual on field ref referee the game.

but its being used for penalty decisions and offsides, which are huge in the context of the match, surely rather a ref be sure and quickly check the monitor rather than a ref and lino awarding a decision which could well be wrong. The average VAR delay per match in the Premier League for the 2024–25 season is around 40 seconds.

But var is still getting things wrong.
How on earth was that not a pen for Brentford yesterday and to rub it in the guy gets booked.

We have seen season after season that refs are reluctant to make a decision that has a clear outcome - penalty awards and red cards. They know they will get dog's abuse from the meedya were it to be against a red shirt, and they will give the benefit to those teams and we know who they are so they 'play safe' and let the game proceed. Var might drag them back and even get them out of jail. Yesterday they were given the chance to award the pen and disallow the Dipper goal but thad they ignored the VAR call and gone and watched the monitor and then ignored the pen and given the goal the rest of the world would have seen a game which reflected the quality of the PL football but demonstrated how execrable the refereeing is!

I don’t know why they’re so insecure about it. In other sports, fans don’t bat an eyelid if the Video Ref corrects the referee’s wrong decision… that’s the whole purpose of it being there, it’s why it was brought in.

They do not embrace the technology like they do in other sports. I have absolute faith in technology in tennis, rugby and cricket. And no one on the field or court seems to cut up rough if the decision goes against. Football arbitration matches football governance - they are both highly questionable.

But neither of those decisions were howlers. If we had not got the penalty and that goal had stood, I might have been miffed about the penalty, but I wouldn’t be raging. We were sold VAR on the premise that it would eliminate the howlers, the Maradona hand-ball, the Henry hand-ball etc, not that they would try to apply it to every marginal decision. Use it for its intended purpose (to eliminate the howlers) and I will happily support it.

The reason why Slot's argument is nonsense according the laws, if the player takes an evasive action in the ball's flight path he's offside as he's impacting the goalkeepers decision making, whether he'd get there or not.

Some might like that, some might not.

In a way I'm glad that's how it's ruled as I want the league to get away from this stupid set piece culture.

but how many would ? would be pages of outrage and cries of corruption. It was a foul, it was a penalty - why should Man City be robbed of that - it could have been absolutely crucial for the match.

It still has its controversies, we just don't watch it more.

I would hate to return to these being given on a regular basis.

And why cant VAR do that all the time. That is the problem, it just isnt capable of consistency

And tbh the above is what we wanted it for. We dont want it for all the little shitty stuff that isnt of importance... toe nails offside, ballk brushing an arm,

it cant please everyone, there will always be outrage.
on a weekly basis i see VAR correctly ruling out a offside goal, awarding a penalty or a red card etc and vast majority of time its the correct outcome.
that sort of diving has reduced and when it happens we can now check. will it still get it wrong sometimes.. yes. but on the main its working and now Refs are communicating with the crowds on verdicts - which was demanded, i'd say its working well.

And without VAR the ref gives that pen all day long.

are you certain ? i thought refs were corrupt and biased? why would a ref blow for a pen to favour city?

that aside, the contact is really hard to spot from the refs posistion, there's no way he could be certain and he would be taking a guess based on the players reaction/crowd reaction. I don't think he would have gave that pre var. in my view.
