Harsh Or Fair Punishment,Thoughts?

Two Portsmouth football fans who posed as stewards in an attempt to watch the south coast derby have been banned from matches for three years.

Brothers Kane and Dale Green headed to St Mary’s Stadium in September without tickets, carrying high-vis vests and radio equipment.

At the ground they put on the items to look like stewards and managed to get into a restricted area, just metres from the pitch, less than an hour before kick-off of this highly anticipated game.

Yesterday, at Southampton Magistrates Court, both men pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation and going onto playing area of a football match.

Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson, Gold Commander for the policing operation around the game, said: “This was a ridiculous plot to try and see the game, despite knowing tickets were sold out and those without tickets would not be getting in.

“They clearly came with the intention to get into the stadium illegally, bringing high-vis vests with ‘steward’ on the back, with one even carrying a radio and earpiece.

“However, what they didn’t bank on was the professionalism and vigilance of the club’s security team and our officers, who quickly spotted they weren’t wearing any accreditation and worked together to eject them.

“Their actions have seen them face very serious consequences in court today and for two people who were so desperate to see this one game, they will now not be able to go to any for three years.

“I would like to thank the stewards who spotted something was wrong and took immediate action, as well as our officers who swiftly intervened and helped ensure they had their day in court.

“I hope this reassures the real football fans that we work closely with football clubs and will take action against those who threaten to disrupt games.”

The court heard how Kane Green, 29, of Magdalen Road, Portsmouth, told officers that he went to the game with the hope to buy tickets outside, but had the high-vis vest, radio and earpiece with him just in case he couldn’t get one.

He denied being near the pitch and said he only wanted to get in to watch the game and didn’t intend to do anything else.

Dale Green, 31, of Devonshire Avenue, Portsmouth, made no comment during his interview.

The pair were ordered to pay fines totalling almost £700 each and received a three-year football banning order.

Made me giggle.

The ban is probably the only course of action authorities can take, though.

They should really be thanking them for highlighting the piss poor security. The ban feels harsh but it's neccesary to stop this becoming a trend before it's started. You just know they'd be loads of wankers filming themselves trying to sneak into games if the punishment was basically nothing.

This is what they should have done with all the dippers taking photos of themselves with fake press credentials at the Champions League Final.
3 years ban feels harsh but there has to be punishment for these things otherwise it escalates into the kind of behaviour we see from Liverpool amd England fans at big games which will only end badly eventually.

Worst part of this story is the game they snuck into was absolutely dreadful. One of the nillest 0-0's I've watched in a while. At least I was able to flick around the tv channels whilst it was on. They've got a 3 year ban and had to watch all of it!

Not quite, they got lucky and were nicked 2 hours before kick off.

I still remember a good friend of mine, and well known at City for jibbing.

On a ban, decided to dress up as a someone working at Old Trafford for our League Cup Semi Final 2nd leg and pretended to be there to clean up rubbish.

He took the full equipment with him, vest, bags etc, and somehow managed to get in and not one person noticed.

As someone else said, they should be thanked for highlighting how bad the club were for allowing them in without ID.
The pair are stupid as they should have whipped the vests off as soon as they were in and just gone around their business as fans.
I think the ban is harsh. They didn’t force their way in nor pose any kind of threat. Just two lads trying their luck to watch a game. A fine or even a bit of community service, but to receive the same punishment as a racist or a thug (or a racist thug) isn’t on for me.

Cleaning up the rubbish at Old Trafford? No there's a big job!

Didn’t an Owdum fan do this at Rochdale a while back and he just jumped into the crowd when he got rumbled?

The Pillocks should have done that at the first chance, as many have said it’s hardly dipper level, compensation gaining, jibbing is it?

Reminds me of Miles Barter (Radio WM) joining a queue of programme sellers outside the main entrance at Stockport v City. He got in, found the toilets and hid in there until the crowds started coming in.

Got to admire their cheek though!
