The Album Review Club - Week #193 (page 1300) - East Side Story - Squeeze

Playing an instrument and singing to create something is a wonderful thing, but is it any different from taking "samples" from so many and creating something new.

Technically, they are both the same thing, on some level.

Unless you have invented your own musical framework, or instruments, playing instruments and singing is in itself a form of 'sampling'.

Yes, but we'll save that until I've actually listened to it.
I stopped listening to hip hop after artists (rightfully) could not sample at will. Before then it was glorious — the creativity, power and humo(u)r. Without sampling hip hop got a lot thinner. There’s still some brilliant stuff but wading through a lot of sameness to find it wasn’t a chore I embraced (and also I wasn’t a kid anymore).

Well that was a short appointment.
Clues were...Daisies, as in there was great play at the time on the record company trying to create "the daisy age"
Johnny Cash "5ft High & Rising" was the inspiration for the album title
And one of the group is Trugoy (yogurt) The Dove
...and of course samples were what took this an age to be allowed on streaming platforms.

There is a good podcast which talks about some of the making of this album. Been meaning to listen to it ever since - also 3 is the magic number is ace. The Steely Dan sample on Eye Know is also great

You are welcome, and for full disclosure, you were the one I really hoped would like this selection.

When I first heard Boy & Bear, I thought Rob might enjoy them to a degree given their Aussie background, the Crowded House cover, and accessible varying sounds on this, but when I reflected on this album over the summer, I kept thinking how much I hoped this could work for you.

When listening to an old The Waterboys track this past week from our Rock Evolution thread (well nominated, btw), the sax used in both bands even reminded me of them somewhat. And while I'm not comparing the two, directly, I have you to thank for turning me on to them properly with This Is The Sea. Consider Manchester Orchestra and Boy & Bear my thanks as well.

I just couldn't say anything when we got together for our pints yet in September. I was very tempted to swap Boy & Bear for Local Natives back in August, but I had that one already written up and had too much to prep for before our UK trip.

And you realise in a moment grace
you might just already be onto something good
I guessed it was my you’d be referring to, it’s very much the type of album I really enjoy.
As I’m now on back in the states with some time to relax in the Florida sunshine,( although we’re experiencing a cold snap currently) I’ll be listening to their other out put, including the soon to be released new album.
So thanks again and I owe you one, hopefully my next pick will it, although it’s going to be very much marmite.

24 "songs" or the 29 "song" version?
I do appreciate that this is a bit of a lengthy one , so I would say go for the 24. I wouldnt wish to subject you to "too much", if it isnt quite your thing

Funny how the memory plays tricks. As people were posting they'd never heard this I was thinking that can't be right as it was gigantic at the time. But I've just looked it up and though this did get to #9 in the album chart, what I thought were huge singles like Me, Myself... only got to #22 and even more surprisingly The Magic Number didn't even get into the top 50. I can only assume I must have been listening to something that had it on heavy rotation and it's distorted my memory.
