Gary "Mani" Mounfield RIP

As someone who absolutely idolises the Roses, I’m fucking heartbroken.

This man has given me music that has, and continues to, to this day, genuinely move me. It makes me buzz, makes me nostalgic, makes me wistful, makes me introspective and makes me yearn for memories I don’t even have, places I’ve never even been and people I’ve never even met. Like one of our greatest BM members @manimanc I still listen to their music every single day, in some form.

In recent times and joyously for me, my daughter has gotten massively into the Roses. Adores their music, has all their posters and dresses like them. Watching her discover new material by them for the first time and being blown away is beyond special to me. She gets it, just as I did and still do.

Mani’s work is sensational. The bass line introduction to I Wanna be Adored is the greatest, most spine tingling call to arms ever written. His bass line on Fools Gold is so godlike it was 100 years ahead of the rest of music back in 1989. His work on every track on that first album is absolutely sublime and always pulls at my heart strings.

A very sad day. What an absolute geez. RIP Mani.
Brilliant mate. Been playing them tonight non-stop.

RIP.

He was in a box behind me in the east stand for a derby, think it was the lucky deflected free kick van persie game and in a drunken fury i abused him terribly. I felt a bit daft at the time and obviously pretty bad now.

He gave a lot to the world, RIP Mani

Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing to do with football. He was an iconic Manchester lad, which baffles me why there are posts saying ‘he was a red but….’

It doesn’t matter about football. He was a supreme, Mancunian musician.

Huge punch to the gut this absolutely devastated. Stone Roses have always been my favourite band and he was the main character of the band always the soul of the group . He epitomises everything that is Manc, In the late 90’s we used to go the Elizabethan in Heaton Moor on a Sunday night and he was in there most weeks. He got the whole pub to be quiet once whilst he rang Noel Gallagher to wind him up over City . Remember being annoyed at the time but he’s one red who I didn’t mind unlike a certain Terry Christian and co. RIP Gary Mounfield

Think I was there that day in front of that box

Was he with Liam?

I recall going to see Primal Scream at the Apollo.
We were in the Aspley Cottage (or whatever it is called) having a pint and someone said the band had turned up on the tour bus.
We pile outside and see Bobby Gillespie's stick insect legs carrying him off the bus and inside. Mani steps off and gets a decent applause as you'd expect. Two blaggers start up "Hey Mani, sneak us in. Mani.... MANI..... COME ON MANI...... get us in......
Mani turns as he's walking through and says "What do you think my fuckin' name is? Gary Oxfam Mounfield?"

Blackpool remains my 2nd favourite all time gig, Spike Island..... well..... at least I can say I was there and have the ticket still.
A sad day, RIP
If that's the Sunday night gig around 2000 I was in that boozer trying to score a ticket.
Breezed through the stage door once the band had started and found myself in 'the wings' about ten feet away from Mani.
Might have been the same night Mani slapped Gillespie for pissing about.

I partly learned to play the bass playing along to their first album. So much fun to play, completely incredible bass lines. Never met him but saw him out and about a few times and he always seemed to have time for anyone who said hello. Top lad.

Was a great night - I've still got the ticket stub. Top Rank Suite - Monday 27th November 1989 - £6 - think i saw James play there same year
James toured in 1988 supported by the Mondays. I went to loads of those gigs on that tour, backstage with the Mondays on quite a few. Also remember going to some James gigs with Inspiral Carpets. These were university venues, just in the cusp of the explosion of “Madchester”, when Mancunians were going mad for the local bands and some were picking up the rave scene, but it hadn’t really spread yet. The Roses were up and coming around this time but weren’t as big as James until the LP came out.

Can't believe this.
Just read it on here.
I've said loads of times on here I was oasis mad cos my mate was Tony's mate.
Before that the first band that I was really into was the Rose's
One regret I have is i never saw them live.
Funny enough just before I read about this I watched I wanna be adored live at hampden.
John squires lyrics and guitar playing was always amazing.
Ian browns voice attitude.
But that bass was the roses sound.
The crowd at hampden bouncing singing mani s base line was amazing.
How weird something told me to put that on YouTube.
I never watch YouTube.
But I needed to hear that base.
Can't belive he's passed..what a story go from been a fan to in the band
He always said he knew he would be in the band.

Life's to short .
Rip mani .
Top bloke.
Top band.
Thank you for been in the band that got me into music.
I'll always say to me the best ever bands are the beatles.
The Rose's
And oasis.
But music is an opinion
No right.
No wrong.
But I've always thought if your into the roses ur cool.
If you don't like them ur a bit suspicious
Like a bloke who doesn't like football.
Not normal

Rip mani for a red you were alright

R.I.P Mani

As others have said, he was (is) a huge part of their youth - mine too.

I was 19 in 1989 and when I bought the album, put it on and the first instrument you hear is Mani's bass.......I was hooked, smitten with this band.

I watched the Made Of Stone documentary again tonight......a tear or two was shed.

The Roses, mean so much to so many people......and now they will always be incomplete.

Thank you Gary Mountfield (Alan Wren, Ian Brown & John Squire) for helping to shape our lives and providing fantastic memories, which will live on

No i didn't see him. At the back of 204 it was. Must've been some kind of showbiz box, saw Noel in there on a couple of different occasions.
Yeah I used to sit 2 rows in front of the boxes in 204. Might have been a different derby but pretty sure it was that one. I was trying to get a picture of liam but he didn’t see me until mani told him

At the end Liam was stood on a seat giving the v’s to anybody who would look and mani was pissing himself laughing

Well said mate.
Perfect.
Music changes people's lives.
Bands you get into as a teenager influences your life
They stay with you

That album was then and still is now the only album I can listen to and not want to fast forward a song
