When we were at our best a few of years ago, if we lost, we only lost by a one goal margin and the opposition needed some good fortune to get the win. Newcastle got that luck last night. I am disappointed in the result, but I can still see the positives.
Main observations....
We could have had 2 penalties.
Haaland probably should have gone to the keeper's right. It was a split second decision. His confidence is sky high and he tried to lob the keeper. It did not work.
Haaland could have had another goal in the first half too.
How did Foden miss by inches? On another night, he would have scored.
Everyone is talking of the second Newcastle goal being offside. It was marginally offside. How the VAR guys did not rule it out is beyond me. That said, there was a foul on Donnarumma that lead up to the second goal that was not even looked at.
Newcastle also had a couple of chances they did not put away.
It was an open and exciting game. Probably too open from Pep's point of view. City were better in the first half, but less effective in the second half.
Newcastle are better than their league position. They never gave up and upset City's rhythm throughout.
How did Tonali not get a yellow or red card? How many fouls were let go the ref in the match?
I'm disappointed. It was a crazy game. Newcastle were very lucky considering some of the VAR decisions. All marginal calls that went their way. On another night, they might not have been so lucky and City would have won 5-2 or something like that.
Many twists and turns to come. After an easier run of fixtures, Arsenal have some tougher games. If we are thereabouts in January we may still have a chance. All is not lost. Just one game.
Come on City!
