It is nearly 60 years now since England won the world cup. After watching yesterdays game against Newcastle I have the feeling we are going backwards in football style with this seasons offerings and Arsenal winning games with tactics that got Pulis, Allerdyce and others hounded out as dinosaurs in a modern game. Yesterday showed Eddie Howe that having three 'enforcers' in midfield and lenient referees he could put the clock back and achieve his aim of winning. Along with pundits who tell all and sundry that putting the boot in is the way to do it, well at least how to stop City. I don't think in an international tournament England would get away with using these tactics and roughhousery. So personally I can't see England winning it again any time soon. After watching years of Pep and his different teams approach to the beautiful game I really am at a loss to understand this dropoff to the lowest common denominator style of football that is now the Premier League, where our future England players learn their trade.

I’m not sure we necessarily need to worry about PL managers who gets Italian and Brazilian midfielders to run into our payers after the ball has gone. If you remember, Monaco and Villarreal were doing exactly the same thing to us in our recent CL games with them.

Tuchel is a very good tactical coach. His teams are a bit boring, but they do have good tactics and he’s beaten better teams than his in finals.

We are the biggest international underachievers in the sport.

1 World Cup win, 0 Euros wins and 0 Nations League wins ranks up with small countries like Czechia and Greece, and below Portugal. None of them have a population over 11 million.

Only 1 trophy and only 3 finals in total puts us miles behind equivalent football nations to ourselves like Germany, Brazil, Spain and Argentina.

Even France who’ve never had a strong league in the history of football have reached 8 finals winning 2 WCs, 2 Euros and 1 Nations League. Considering how strong our league has been throughout football history, always being well above the French league, that puts us to fucking shame.

Our problem was historically not being able to pass the ball. Our Academies did not train youngsters to be technically good enough in tight situations, they were decades behind other countries at developing players. I called our poor passing ‘The English Disease’ for years. English Academies would bring though good players by chance, in spite of the Academy scene and due to the individuals’ abilities. Even big name players were shite under pressure at creating chances.

We’ve also struggled with not having the right coach in place. We have improved a lot at bringing through more technically gifted players recently. Even our centre backs are good on the ball these days, some can even play in midfield, but we’ve always struggled tactically. Southgate got found out against every better coached team we came up against in his entire tenure, even if they didn’t have better players than us. Plus we didn’t beat any team who were on a par or better than us in quality under him. Tuchel has a proven record of being able to do that.

Also think that Germany, Brazil and Netherlands are going through periods of having their worst teams they’ve ever had in their history, we can win the next WC. But Spain, France, Portugal and Argentina all have top sides so can see why we wouldn’t. But long term, we have enough money going into our Academies to produce the players required… worldwide at the moment, the quality of players coming through on the game is sliding significantly.

Brazil have only won ONE world cup since 2002, I think. Is it a better record than England's? Yes; of course it is. That is a VERY low bar though, to be fair. But, considering their mythical status in the football world it's a pretty meh record.

Fuck me, please no. I'd rather see the Rags win the league this season than England win the world cup.

Next summer imo.

We will be out at the R16 or quarters at best.

That defence we have is Europa League level at best and until Kane can prove he can do it in a big game, we will always come up short for a world class moment from a striker.

If you get giddy and get sucked in by the hype it'll all end in disappointment.

That being said, outside of maybe France & Spain there's not much out there or really coming through.

In general international football is poorer than the average standard over the top 5/6 leagues and the gap is growing.

We'll win it next year. I've never been so confident. Tuchel has picked players on form, recognised the need for balance in the side and looked for us to do what we do better than the majority of other teams - run and run and run.

We've got so many options across the pitch other than at centre forward, but we've still got goals across the side if Kane was missing.

60 years of hurt eroded.

No I don't think we will. We've had this massive explosion in English football style. Peps style and methods have brought an extra dimension to the English game. No longer just relying on passion and one or two skilled players.

But I think it chance is now gone. The clear spine of players from one club didn't really develop (I think because it was City). We still have that lack of belief when it comes to European big boys. And now we're playing players on form rather than a clear defined machine of players who play regular together.

Players on form is OK but when it comes to playing the bigger games, the Germanys or brazils they tend to crumble under that pressure.

We've got some very good English players, from Stones through to Kane. They need to be the regular team that become ready to face Italy in the semis. Those players have done it before, used to that environment.

In any tournament you've got to factor in the officials and that can make a huge difference, some are very poor, especially in the early rounds until they're weeded out and at least one was very poor in a final.
If a ref gives an iffy late penalty against you it could be the difference between first & second in the group and make your route to the final stages much more difficult.

But going back to the original question - Yes England can win it, but I'm not sure how good they are at the moment because they're always playing poor teams in qualifying. Every qualifying group needs two 'decent' teams or the group is just a collection of glorified friendlies to be negotiated before automatic qualification.

You always have a chance, but there's always at least one team better. I think you are capable of going really far though. I have always thought the seemingly mandatory world class label is applied too liberally with England players. I'm an older ****, and it seems that accolade is given to players I would never put at that pinnacle. So thinking you are better than you actually are, never helps. Semi finalists a good bet, then its who steps up to the plate time.

As a Scot, just happy to be there, I never think we are better than we are, because its fucking obvious we have limitations. I thought at the Euros, we were by a distance, the least technically gifted team there. Our WC group saw us win games where we were utterly rank. The other night was typically Scottish, nerve shredding, backs to the wall, behind the couch, out from behind the couch, Tierney belter and its 3.2 up go mental, ref doesnt end it, nearly ends me. McLean chip, remove morphine drip, never in doubt.

If we get out of the group, we've won our World Cup.
