Does anyone play Chess?

At my parents house, I have a chess set that's a bunch of shot glasses. Every time you take a piece, you have to do the shot (double shot for the king or queen). Kind of acts as a handicap. I've only played it once though because it's quite expensive to do, and when both players are shit, it turns out you take quite a lot of pieces before anyone wins.
 
I’d played chess all my life until settled down with the missus, from primary school through to playing stoned with all my mates in my 20’s, every now and then I still have the odd game, I’m very good even though I say so myself, used to be able to beat all the computers etc, and I’ve still got all my medals and certificates in a drawer from when I was younger and represented school and county etc.

Love the game, but just can’t be arsed any more.

I represented us for our football teams, athletics squad, table tennis snd Badmington. My Nerdy chess teammates were surprised that, not only I played, but was better than most of them. Only 3 players were better. I really enjoyed it. A marvelous game for us strategically gifted brain boxes, who could also make all the Sport's teams.

I used to play on Chess.com every night at work, until someone set up a dodgy firestick on the tele about 10 years ago and I've not played since.

This has renewed my enthusiasm though. Think I might give it another go next time I'm working the night shift. Think my user name was just 'MCFC'. I was even captain of a City team that used to play football matches against fans of other teams. But I'll probably have to re-register as I've no idea what email address I used.

Forget all that. Looks like my company has blocked access to the site now.

I came back to Chess about 10-11 years ago and I agree, I did not like the way the terminology changed. I suppose the reasons why were that you have a castle and you can castle probably is confusing in other languages. However, the advancement of Chess is crazy now.

It didn't change, it was a Rook 50 years ago.
 
Played for my school and for the county once...and never asked back after that once.
Once did one of those 12 board set ups against John Littlewood and was beaten very quickly,
Don't think I have played now in about 20years though.

Lots of people do as it is the common name as opposed to the real name. Like saying West Ham's ground was called Upton Park, plenty thought it was its real name so it stuck.

Regardless of terminology, I still often castle on the wrong side!
 
I haven't played for maybe 35 years and on a flight back from Tampa to Vermont the other week, noted on the in flight entertainment alongside films and music, was a game of chess v the computer.
Played two games and won them both!
The computer started off aggressively and I was on the back foot but both times as soon as I got the upper hand and kept on the attack, it folded and I was triumphant!
Was quite chuffed with myself!
 
I found it quite fascinating the number of people playing it in Washington Park in New York - an area with public chess tables. I stopped to watch strangers playing each other, friends, some speed chess and got the 'hey man, d'ya wanna play?' invite to sit down.

I've not played myself for years either so didn't wanna take up the offer and get my arse handed to me but would have fancied it if I'd been experienced enough.
 
It should be called a castle as there's the castling move. But rook seems more common.

The Queen's Gambit is worth a watch.
