27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

I credit him for switching position. Certainly not easy and he's done a good job of it...

But in my opinion, he's just doing a good for a midfielder who isn't a right back and that still doesn't mean he's actually a top right back.

I'm not really sure who is out there that we could sign but I'm sure there's better options than a midfielder who is out there doing the best he can.

It'd be nice to see us eith players in their actual positions. It often feels like we're patching up holes somewhere in the team.

I agree and now that he has had a good run of games, he could perhaps move into midfield where we have more problems than anywhere. How attacking ability looks relatively good on the right so I would have no issues with him playing on that side.

We need a right back and a central midfielder. Probably have to wait until Sunmer to get them though.

Overall he was good again, vital recovery pace and really learning how to play the position, provided the assist and a good outlet down the flank. Even with yhe error he was still in contention for top 3 performers.

It's an odd one with him because he is needed in the walker role with his pace as the only defender in the back 4 with genuine pace but he has a lot to offer going forward as the only player willing to run in behind off the ball as we saw for the opener. I'd like to see us find a way of utilising that attacking asset of his more.

Wingback would be ideal for him - occasional blunder shouldn't be as costly and utilises his attacking threat. 3 4 2 1, Nico G and any 3 of Doku/Foden/Cherki/Bernardo/Reijnders behind Haaland.
 
Sometimes players make mistakes and they cost the team, every goal scored you can find a culprit if you look back at it.
I know it's a forum and we all have opinions but this player has to have a faultless game every week or some want him sacked off.
I will be disappointed if he's not in the right back position on Tuesday as I think he's a decent player and certainly not a liability.
I think this is a case of "Be careful what you wish for".
 
I think that Nunes is a good RB for our side, barring the occasional mishap. Of late, Nunes has improved a lot a RB and until the Leeds game, hadn't made a huge gaff for several games running.

Nunes just needs to concentrate a bit more especially deep in our half to cut out these errors.

I think you’ve slightly missed the point. Your comparison falls down because you’re suggesting we should excuse Nunes’ occasional, circus-level errors simply because our best right-back has also made mistakes in the past. The issue is that Nunes is not as talented or accomplished as Walker to give him the liberty to make such errors.
 
He's always had a mistake in him but does offer a real attacking threat and a good cross which we didn't really have with Walker. So at the moment the good is outweighing the bad.
 
In the first half, Reijnders was repeatedly showing inside and looking for the ball from Nunes, yet because the pass would be square and between opponents, he chose not to risk the pass and instead recycled backwards. That was all happening in the Leeds half. It’s strange that he subsequently chose to play an even higher-risk ball in his own half. Think it’s more to the fact that we lose shape in defensive situations and that players have fewer options.

Don’t think dropping him for either Khusanov or Lewis is currently an improvement, and it might also dent his confidence, which may already be fragile, so better he play against Fulham.

He literally managed to fuck up 3 times for their goal, so while no individual mistake was a catastrophe, combined they were a comedy of errors. Misplaced the initial pass, then played the central striker onside while everyone else had jumped up, and finally, somehow managed to take it off Gvardiol who seemed to have dealt with it and hand it back to Calvert-Lewin. It was an absolute calamity, and I say that as someone who quite likes him.

No, but thinking long term, we need to be getting someone in that we genuinely think is world class or capable of becoming world class. I feel like at the moment, we've got a few too many players who can 'do a job' or are 'decent.' And you can get away with having that in a few positions when the rest of the team is world class (Delph at left back, for example), but you can't when the rest of the team are just good players. We've gone from a squad that has 6 or 7 world class players to one that has 2 or 3 on a good day, and Kyle Walker was one of our ever-present, never injured, 60 games a season world class players for most of our success.

Don’t disagree with that, but some of the alternative players mentioned on here are good and in form but not necessarily ‘world class’ potential.

We’ve bought/brought some exceptional young talent and added high-quality players too, but for multiple reasons we’ve struggled to get the balance/rotation right. We desperately need Rodri back or someone else in who can bolster that midfield. I’m patient enough to wait for that to happen before writing off others.
 
I think using him and O Reilly higher and wider is better for us, they have the lungs to run back.

Our inverted wingers and midfielders need to play deeper and more central.
