Will we win the league this season?

And yet, and yet, and yet; from memory, didn't we achieve the highest points total in the period from New Year's Day to the end of the season? Autumn and the first half of winter well and truly did for us. And that last 4-5 months were done without Rodri. Big if, but if we were within, say, 4 points of Arsenal come March 1st, it'll be interesting!

The big money will still be on Arsenal at the moment, though. I noticed in the post match guff on Sky that they seemed to consider Chelsea as the main challengers to Arsenal. Which I find strange. Chelsea are just as inconsistent as us!
Chelsea did look good today I thought.

Yes we got 40 points from 19 games ie the 2nd half of the season.
Liverpool got 39 points from 20 games and Arsenal 38 points from 20.

Fun facts:

1. We are as consistent as Arsenal over the last 32 games - 19 games of 24/25 (ie the 2nd half of the season) and the first 13 of 25/26.
Our record W20 D5 L7 for 65 points
Arse W18 D11 L3 for 65 points.
Our goal difference is better and we are in with a chance of being calendar year champions ;) (not that anyone gives a shit...)

2. Since the upturn in our form after the defeat at Forest in 24/25 we have both played 23 games.

Our record W15 D4 L4 for 49 points
Arsenal W14 D7 L2 for 49 points.

Again our GD is better so we are top of the 23 game form table :)). Interstingly defensively we only conceded 18 and Arsenal best conceding 17.

I want to think we could but in reality we don't appear to have improved much on last season. You never know though.

In terms of actual results, we have improved massively on last year - it’s not even remotely up for debate.

If you look at the 13 fixtures we’ve played so far this season - we only got 15 points from those last year. This year we’re on 25. Last year we lost to United, got smashed by Liverpool and Arsenal, drew to a really poor Everton and Brentford.

We’re now about to enter a run of 6 fixtures in which even last year - as bad as we were -we still won 4, drew 1 and lost 1. They’re 6 winnable games.

If we continue on this path we’ll be in the mix come the new year.

We're actually 2 points worse off than last season which feels a bit strange

Arsenal had a difficult away fixture today and they've already played at our traditional graveyard (Anfield) and won at Newcastle

Yes, they could easily suffer a wobble and drop a few points, but I'm more concerned with our fragility, which not for the first time, was exposed yesterday

Blind faith suggests that Rodri could make a huge difference, but realistically he's already been out for longer than the "2-3 weeks" post match assessment following his early withdrawal at Brentford.
We really miss the leadership of Rodri. At half time we were cruising yesterday but we just seemed nervous till Pep did his time-out. We are missing a dominant presence within the team to just calm it all down. I still think we have a good chance this season because there are no brilliant teams. Arsenal are solid at the back but still lack flair.

No no no no no; far too positive for on here.

I was more impressed with Chelsea than Arsenal given that they have Cole Palmer to come in. A draw suits us.

City need to improve and we will if Rodri recovers. For now, we have to keep Arsenal and Chelsea within striking distance.

Perhaps the first question marks against Arsenal were raised this weekend.
Let's face it, we all know hanging onto the Rodri memories from seasons past is pure fantasy. Even if he does remain fit until the end of the season. There's no way he hasn't got an eye on the world cup when he's extending his body.
The best we can hope is for a fully fit and functioning Rodri to return next season.

Assuming we play to our best and you find your hard games tough, I'd go:
18 points City - Losing to Palace (A)
14 points Arsenal - Drawing to Chelsea (A), Everton (A) and losing to Villa (A).

I think the timeslot of the Everton game makes it tough for you.

I also think our Sunderland (A) game is a lot easier than it was for you, they have 8 or 9 at AFCON. 4 of which started against you and 2 came on.

That's my optimistic view, realistic is we get about the same points.
Predicted for the next 7 prior to the games this weekend, so far so good. Although our 2nd half was not a confidence filler.

Big week ahead:
Fulham (A)
Sunderland (H)

Arsenal:
Brentford (H)
Villa (A)

Chelsea:
Leeds (A)
Bournemouth (A)

If we get 6 points I think we make up more ground on Arsenal and extend the distance on Chelsea.

You're absolutely correct that Arsenal lack flair.

However, that just makes them occasionally dull and not dissimilar to some of the previous Chelsea teams that powered their way to the title without making too many friends at rival clubs.

It didn't bother them and it shouldn't bother Arsenal

In contrast we have 2-3 weaknesses that are less exposed with a fully fit Rodri

Even when defending set pieces we look less vulnerable with Rodri protecting Donnarumma (ironically it worked perfectly at the Emirates)

He also brings a midfield goal threat and with our possession stats so much higher we don't get caught on the break so much with that diagonal ball behind our left back.

We are definitely playing better than last season but we have still not sorted our defence. Leeds would never have scored yesterday but we gave them total gifts. Fading in the ssecond half is still happening. Is it a hangover to the CWC as Chelsea are also conceding silly goals on occasions?

arsenal knickers drop off over xmas and we get a run together
I kind of agree about Arsenal, however I doubt we can put together the 14 15 game winning run that has won us many of our titles. The way I see it this season is more about who is worst rather than who is better. What I mean by that is that no team will record monster points, the winners will be the one who drops the least points, a points total in the low to mid 80s will win the title.
