10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

I do think Pep's right. Cherki gets his head down he can be a great, instead of a Neymar.

"I never saw Messi play a cross like he has done," said Guardiola. "Messi is the best player to play the game but I never saw these kind of crosses.

"Crosses are fine, right or left or which part of your feet, it doesn't matter. If it is effective, it is fine, but I like the simplicity because I learned from Messi that I never make a mistake with the simple things.

"The simple things he does perfectly, then he dribbles past four or five players. I want players to do the simple things well and after that you have special talent and he can do whatever he wants.

"But if he doesn't work now, it will be a problem. He will be in trouble.
"

Pep’s comments sound quite negative especially if compared to his comments on Sav. Sounds like maybe he wants Cherki to stop the tricks and get the basics right but can’t see what he’s basing that on? Is it just the w way it’s been reported I haven’t had chance to watch the presser yet

Love him the way he is, we go to be entertained, and is an entertainer. We miss David S so much but he’s the closest we have. He sees the picture.. Pep must not take this out of his game!!

Very interesting post match presser from the bald fella. Playing Cherki's performance down comparing it to a friendly and saying hes had a lot of good players in his career who can do the good stuff but if they dont do their job for the team there's no hope (or words to those effect). Then seems to make a big point on Savinho

You misunderstood. He was describing players who treat high pressure games and situations like they’re playing a friendly. It’s a compliment.

It’s the if he doesn’t work now he will be introuble bit that confused me

If unnecessary showboating results in the team being under more pressure, the player will be dropped, whoever he is. Pep hates unnecessary showboating.

He was warning Cherki about that as well as suggesting that defensive work rate is a must, unless he wants to be on the bench again.

That’s not stopping creativity, it’s saying make the best action to minimise risk but maximise opportunity.

He just means Cherki is talented, dont be a show pony, concentrate on doing whats needed. He's just thinking about what Cherki turns out to be in future imo. I think he's got a point, but yeah disappointing.

It's not disappointing. More disappointing is that people who haven't managed kids think they know better.

Cherki had brilliant moments but also some selfish ones. Making him a proper team player is the key to his success at City.

In the most intense games so far, vs Liverpool and Newcastle, he wasn't quite in the game. A lot of work is needed. But in terms of talent, he's unique. Future looks very bright.

Pep’s comments are disappointing.

Don't think that this is criticism of Rayan (media will definitely show it as that). Pep is just wishing that he be more like Messi (team player, efficient, hard worker & no show off) than someone like Neymar (flashy, show off & lazy). We all know where both are currently. Pep knows that Rayan is a special player and he doesn't want him to waste his enormous potential. It's a reminder to him to keep his head down, work hard, do the basics right and then he can easily realise his potential and become the best attacking midfielder in the world!

Was that produced by the Panorama editors?

I listened to his full interview and there was nothing negative about Cherki at all. Just his usual stuff reminding young players that they have to work as hard off the ball as on it, and how attackers are free to be inventive in the final third.
