Should National Service be mandatory ?

Not really. I'm saying a civil defence force doesn't require NS to achieve. Even someone who has completed and then left NS, they will still require kitting and operational readiness training, so why not just cut out the NS in the first place?
Does it have to be solely focused on military preparedness? Why not make the structure of what that would look like, were it needed, the basis of NS, but make the focus of NS be on the S for the N?

Don’t you think even getting a foundation under your belt would be beneficial rather than wait until too late.

No one wants war on our doorstep but the reality is we’re clearly getting involved in maintaining European democracy which could escalate at any moment.

We are not prepared to fend off an assault like Ukraine have suffered.

It’s all idle internet chat atm as I don’t believe the Government are considering this line of action.
See one of my previous post where I suggested basic military skills/fitness being taught at school.

Absolutely nothing wrong with civil service when it serves the community, and country and so long as it is remunerated accordingly. I'd certainly welcome a period of service for all young school leavers. National pride is certainly lacking, but you can't force people to have pride in their country if they don't believe in its values.
Chicken, meet egg.

You go first!

My question would why wouldn’t any 18 year old want to get fit learn maybe have a few mates from the experience?

It’s not like you signing up then once trained you of to places you might actually be in danger? It be 6/12 months of your life..

I don’t disagree that overall health (nutrition, fitness) should be an integral part of required education, as should financial literacy and an understanding of how the adult financial world works.

However, I have concerns that basic educational skills are on the wane, so loading the system up with even more requirements, to include military training, strikes me as a bridge too far.

[See what I did there? ;-) ]

Good film.

Your generation completely screwed the country, you will be one of the only generations in history to have left the country in a worst state than you found it

Get some respect for the young people trying to clear up the mess you made and hang your head in shame for your sins
First of all what is his generation? Secondly how have they screwed the country? If he’s a similar age to me and born in the 60s then his generation grew up walking to school, having hopefully one holiday a year in the uk, grew up in the 80s with massive unemployment, then hopefully got work and helped build the country through the 90s and 2000s, contributing tax towards a state pension and building the nhs to a level unknown in the past, bringing prosperity to many through those times, helping secure us in the Cold War and eventually winning that. His generation have brought us the technology only dreamed off in sci fi movies to allow us to supposedly have a better life. It’s only in the last 5/10 years it’s gone to rat shit through the greed of bankers and a pandemic, non of which most of his generation had anything to do with. His generation also had to pay off the debt of ww2 caused by the previous generation but they didn’t fucking whinge about it.

Great response and I look forward to seeing his reply

I’d bring National Service back in a heartbeat but call it “Citizenship”.. No need to make it any form of combatant exercise but teach participants to respect others , teach them some basic life skills but most important teach them to respect themselves..

It’s never happening however in this country.. especially with the current leadership

Isn’t that the role of parents!
