Brentford (H) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Nice to hear Pep thanking the fans !

A pretty miserable night, I can't say I'm disappointed to have been sat on my sofa with a decent glass (or 4) of red wine, so can I also say thanks, and I hope you dry out soon.

Do you think? I didn't.

Despite all the hype around him, I still haven't been impressed— nowhere near as much as I was with Palmer, Lewis, Bobb, or NOR, for example. That said, he's still young, but probably needs a loan.
Ye I think he played well, it's only his 3rd game but against a half decent Brentford team he was ok.

Obviously he's not ready for 1st team i agree a loan could be good for him

Weirdly that was possibly the most encouraging performance of the season.....for a number of reasons,

Despite the changes we looked very fluid and connected as a team in all areas...the passing and ball retention as well as winning the ball back was a lot closer to our best teams of the last few seasons....and again despite the changes

On an individual basis as well there was some real noteables moments

1. Sav - Ive been hugely critical of him - but it looks like something has clicked with him (probably from his recent meetings with Pep) - he is putting effort in and although the goal was lucky he made it by driving at the defender postively and more importantly aggressively...something we havent seen a lot from him...he looks motivated and that wil only lead to more improvement.

2. Nunes coming on in midfield...I know he wont ever play there long term BUT it shows that Pep thinks he can do a job in there at times. ......he has learnt to defend from the fullback position and I wonder if this has helped his ability to play in midfield a bit more for Pep

3. Nico OReilly - one or two moments of absolute class in retaining possession fullback (especially when he briefly changed to right back)

4. Khusonov - one rash challenge which could have got him a red but the yellow was possibly just about right as the cover was there - but after that his ability to cover inbehind and his reading of the game is great....Ake also played well and he might be off but he has been a fantastic servant.

There was the obvious stuff with Nico G, Cherki and Foden that everyone can see as well
I thought that was a weak performance but it was good enough to beat a very weak side.

AI explained Hinchcliffe’s perceived hatred of City ….

Andy Hinchcliffe doesn't seem to "hate"
Man City; rather, his past connections involved being sold by Man City manager Howard Kendall, and then later sold byKendall at Everton, leading to a slightly awkward past professional relationship with Kendall, but no strong signs of bitterness towards the club itself, as he moved on to other successful stints like with Sheffield Wednesday.
Here's a breakdown:
  • Man City Connection: Hinchcliffe was a player for Manchester City early in his career.
  • Howard Kendall Factor: He was sold by manager Howard Kendall at Man City, then ended up playing for Kendall again at Everton, who then sold him again.
  • No Indicated Bitterness: Despite these managerial shifts, interviews suggest he moved on without significant bitterness towards Man City, focusing more on his subsequent career at clubs like Sheffield Wednesday.
So, while he had dealings with the club and manager Kendall, there's no evidence of a deep-seated "hate" for Manchester City as an institution.
So, he's just a ****, then - as we all thought

Couple of good saves from Trafford. Other than that Brentford offered little or carried any level of urgency in their play.

Savinho had a good game. Cherki again with his class.

Good solid performance that using home advantage. One superb goal, one fortunate goal and job done.

Cherki has magic in his boots, and Foden coming on for Bobb really helped us; Savinho also much more effective tonight whilst Nathan Ake had a solid game, and helped settle Khusanov down after a rather mad first 15 mins - couldve been a red but for once we got lucky.

Nice to see Pep learning from the Leverkusen brain fart and mixing/matching experienced pros, and also managing minutes so many of the best XI appeared but very few had to do a full 90. Get through Saturday and theyve a week off to recharge. Another pleasing night and into the semi finals - the draw gives us the 2nd leg at home so thats all we can ask for.

Was always going to be a little bit drab with the number of changes. Ake was solid, Khus superb second half (but could have been a red I heard)!

The likes of Rico and Mukasa need more than the odd game to show what they're about. Rico was okay but same issues remain with him at the moment.

First goal was crucial and what a goal it was. Still need to see more from Reijnders but job done ultimately and lovely to see another academy lad get on - well done Charlie Gray, great name too!

Sav should continue to gain confidence.

We played pretty good overall and managed the game with well.It was a wet, shitty night though with a lot of sodden fans sat further down in front of me.

Savinho did well when he came in at Madrid and Palace as well. Pleased for him.

Strange take for me, they started well then we controlled the game completely, they had 3 shots on goal, all saved.

Nearly 90% pass accuracy.

Lots of positives tonight and an all-round decent performance. There's no getting away from the fact that Brentford were very poor, but as they say, you can only play what's in front of you.

After our first goal, I think Brentford were more concerned with their next PL match v Wolves than progressing in the Carabao Cup.

I hope they go down this season.

Kusanov is both great and reckless in equal measure.
Savinho played alright but still can't shoot for love nor money, his goal was a lucky deflection.
