There's got to be a case for a sin bin type system because that sending off has ruined the game ( not that it was that great anyway ).

Maybe the ref can suggest a suspension of the player from the game for a certain amount of time ( in 30 minute intervals ) depending on the severity of the tackle. It was clearly a rash tackle, but not worthy of a total pivot in advantage to the other team.

I know it means nothing overall, but from a neutrals point of view and the paying fans who have looked forward to the match, the game ends up ruined, from a team versus team setup/perspective.

Var can't tell the ref to give a yellow instead of nothing, but if they think it's a red they can call him to review whether a yellow was given or not.
