33 | Nico O'Reilly - 2025/26

him and nunes are a real lesson for youth coaches that it is your responsibility to figure out what position a player is destined to be. because they are both clearly far better at fullback than their original positions - and the signs were there. You can start and even promote to the first team as one position and figure out you were always supposed to be on another part of the pitch.
I think I've read something about this before.

Very often they are "failed" attacking players who have good athleticism in that role.

I think Dani Alves was one example. I believe there were many more elite fullbacks who started elsewhere

Many did. Hakimi, Marcelo, Cafu to name a few

Personally didn't think he played as well as some of the other performances. Could be a little bit of fatigue, this is the most he's played consistently. He wasn't bad but didn't seem as sharp.

Looked to be on fumes the second half. Was really surprised when we brought the firdt subs on and he didn’t go off.

There was a little spell midway through the Second Half when we kept conceding possession essentially because O'Reilly and Gvardiol are too one footed and were both trying to play narrow slide rule passes with the outside of their left foot.

However until Doku returns we'll need those lung busting runs to provide the width.

He was clobbered early on in the game and was not running freely for a good while. Probably took the edge off his performance but I still thought he did well. He is an incredibly difficult opponent for an attacker as he has real strength, speed and is not afraid to put his foot in.

I feel like the lack of Doku is something he's still getting used to. He's really good at exploiting the space left behind from Doku preoccupying multiple defenders

He was badly fouled right in front of where I sit at the start of the first half. You could see straight away he was hurt and he was limping for a good 5 minutes or so. I’m genuinely surprised he even managed to get through the whole game. That probably explains why he didn’t quite look as sharp as in recent weeks between that knock, and the workload he’s had, it was always going to take a bit of edge off his performance.

We know that we’ll have Ait-Nouri back by February, so better to burn his lungs now and get him game time. Strong lad already, so Heaven knows what shape he’ll be in when he turns 26 and is battle-hardened.

Badly fouled ?
It was a clean tackle ask Mr Tierney.

I think he’s definitely tailed off a bit from a month ago but progress isn’t linear and he must be knackered. Hopefully he’ll get more rest in January, we have the week break and then RAN will be back from AFCON which if we’re lucky he’ll play himself into match fitness and some form over there.

Playing too many games perhaps.

Shit myself in the first half, thought he’d done his knee in putting a block tackle in.

Wasn’t his best performance the other day but what a player this lad is though for a 20 year old.

Really is incredible that he came into the team at 19, in a brand new position and has just slotted in seamlessly, like he's been there years.

Not many seasoned pros have done what he has done in such a short space of time.
I've never seen anything like it.i over 50 years of watching the game.im proud of the lad.. Brilliant, just Brilliant.

I thought he struggled vs West Ham, and really struggled today. Perhaps hitting that proverbial wall that young players almost always hit. Just has to keep pushing through it.
