The Farmers Protests in London

What's the EU got to do with domestic tax policy?
I take it you have never heard of the Common Agricultural Policy.

It is pretty basic stuff if you are talking about the EU and farmers, but you don't even qualify a dilettante.

So, farmers keep telling us that they spend huge amounts on capital expenditure like tractors , combine harvesters etc and make little or no profit. Other businesses with a similar economy are valued on a multiple of their profit, which would be very low - unlikely to trouble IHT. They can also ensure that they transfer the ownership to their kids early enough to avoid the tax.

Perhaps if the farmers listen to their accountant more than Clarkson, they might not be so worried and even suicidal…

A poorly run farm just like any poorly run business will struggle to make money but those who are switched on can make plenty of money, whilst at the same time watching the value of their land soar.

My mate has no problem making money and can easily afford the insurance premiums to cover his potential IHT liability.

I think topping yourself to avoid tax is cold and heartless and even Scrooge never went that far.

You make it sound like they have no choice, but it’s pathetic, we can all avoid tax by topping ourselves but we are not all so rich or such fucking tightwads who are so desperate to avoid paying tax.

If they just paid their taxes like everyone else they wouldn’t be in the position. They obviously love saving tax more than living their lives, if any of this nonsense is true.

If everyone took the same approach then there would be no one left to pay tax to subsidise farmers and then they would go out of business.
Let's be honest mate, nobody has killed themselves because inheritance tax laws were changed. What has happened is some poor people have killed themselves, as they always have, and some of those people will happen to be farmers that the right wing press can use to go "See? Look what this new law has done." They and their families deserve compassion, but of course their memory will be hijacked to make a political argument.

They did exactly the same thing when tax was added to private schools and some schools that were blatantly already going to close after years of mismanagement happened to close around that time.

I thought this discussion was about British farmers, What's your point?

Because house prices have rocketed over the years giving owners huge tax free profits

That is the perception but is it really true? If you purchased a house for £100k in 1999 it will be worth around £450k today on average. Your initial £100k is worth equivalent of £221k today, you will have paid in today’s money the equivalent of about £160k in interest. So that gets you to £381k, sure it’s marginally outstripped inflation but not by as much as you’d think from the headline numbers and if you pay 40% IHT on the bit over £325k you’d be looking at £50k tax so you’d walk away with £400k so by my reckoning about £19k “profit” and I suspect my interest of £160k is low as it’s front loaded … I’d wager it’s nearer £175-200k so there goes that “profit”.

And, of course, none of them will actually pay any IHT.
They also seem unwilling to give their farms to their kids and live for 7 years longer, which means nobody would pay anything.

The tax issue for farmers is only part of the problem
Danish farmers have had enough of being forced to feed a certain substance to their cows, which have fallen sick
It is toxic to them and will if course be the same to human consumers .You prob haven't heard about this ..

Many farms in this country have been instructed to use Bovare...which needs gloves and masks to be fed to the cows .

The swiss farmers are as we speak ,joining forces with the French to revolt. This is serious .
Not one person on this thread seems to understand the seriousness of what is going on.....by Feb next year ,everybody will
Those of you more interested in the 115 thread will suddenly realize you get been looking the wrong way .

Mainstream news and politics are not where you should be looking for your info
Ask a Danish farmer what's really going on.; ))

Have our farmers been forced to feed toxic food to their cattle?

When I heard about this cow feed additive that's used to stop cows from farting I thought it was an April fool!

It’s quite plainly a load of bollocks, but Mr Tweety seemed to think it was a good reason to let the rich fuckers off.

Even if it was true, then it’s still a rubbish reason for letting them avoid taxes - everyone could threaten to kill themselves to get special treatment if that worked.

They imo, were right to introduce the tax. What’s disappointing is that they have not left it as it was

Fair play to you mate and I honestly hope people don’t defend any of their policies because they are Labour fanboys / fangirls - especially as they are so prone to changing their minds anyway!!!

This government is led, it doesn’t lead. Sooner we get someone in charge who has the strength of their convictions (and isn’t a lunatic) the better - Starmer needs to go for the sake of this Labour Party.

I personally think that the inheritance tax on farms was wrong. Food security is a huge issue
A big field which is planted with wheat and then harvested is financially pretty low yield, but, that land could be worth a fortune to a developer
If the farmer sells arable land for development, then that's where there should be a minimum of 50% tax on the sale
The government won't implement this as they've gone ahead with a stupid, inappropriate, wild west, house building policy

Another u-turn on a half baked policy, implemented solely due to Labour’s malicious assault on sections of society it dislikes.

What a disgraceful shambles this government is.
So did you agree with the policy in the first place and you are disappointed they have changed the policy, and softened the "malicious assault" 4 months before it comes in?
