Don’t forget Ian Bowyer……That was a fantastic team. Robertson, Withe, Woodcock, Gemmill, Needham, Shilton, McGovern, Francis etc etc. For a provincial team to come from pretty much nowhere and achieve what they did was staggering, really. I know it was a different era, but it makes Leicester's achievement in 2016 look like small beer in comparison. League champions and back to back European Cup triumphs. That Clough chap knew his stuff.
And in those days you got behind the English club, always remember the Francis header against Malmo and jumping up as if it was City scoring..R.I.P John Robertson..That was a fantastic team. Yes i did the same when Withe scored for Villa tooAnd in those days you got behind the English club, always remember the Francis header against Malmo and jumping up as if it was City scoring..R.I.P John Robertson..
Don’t forget Ian Bowyer……
Robertson defied logic. He looked hefty, overweight but wow could he get to that byline and deliver a cross to perfection.
I guess City fans can pay their respects on Saturday and I’ll be in front of the TV applauding.
City signed Rick Holden with the same build but it didn’t quite follow suit…..
Has he got past his fullback yet ?
Not forgetting those 2 stalwarts of central defence -That was a fantastic team. You wouldn't take liberties with either of them. Or, indeed, quite a few in that team. Not forgetting those 2 stalwarts of central defence -
Kenny Burns and Larry Lloyd.
Hard men, but not thugs, as Clough would never have put up with that sort of behaviour on a football field. You wouldn't take liberties with either of them. Or, indeed, quite a few in that team.
Very well put.Hard men, but not thugs, as Clough would never have put up with that sort of behaviour on a football field.
I remember being at that game with my Notts County supporting mate - he was far more miserable about the whole experience than we were. My abiding memory was us singing 3-0. 3-0, 3-0 watching the fourth go in and seemlessly switching to 4-0, 4-0, 4-0. But yes I remember Robertson as being unplayable - but having just looked it up, I had forgotten that Francis scored a hatrick and Robertson missed a penalty!I remember watching City at Forest's ground when John Robertson tore us apart. They were 4-0 up after 70 mins, had hit the post twice and the bar twice. There was a large City away support and we managed to win our first corner 3/4 of the way through the game which prompted the City contingent to sing "We're only warming up, we're only warming up".............absolute classic response to a drubbing.
