Yes, they are real horses, but most of them are legendary horses in 1980s and 1990s. So, the anime is popular among wide generations, from 20 to 65 years old in Japan. The protagonist horse girl is an legendary horse that started the carrier in a very rural small racetrack, and the anime made a lot of people visit the old small deserted racetrack.
