Exeter City (H) | FA Cup | Post Match Thread

Never would have believed how anti-City Sky are, but if you look at the top stories in the news tab on the app, our 10-1 win is 19TH on the list.

Could have understood that a couple of days in, but half a day after the match? Was the same when we put 6 past the rags.
Does the positioning of the articles depend on how many clicks they get? (genuine curiosity)

Wow didn’t know this we make history again!

No, even across the entire history of English football (since the formation of the Football League in 1888 and the FA Cup in 1871), Manchester City appear to be the only team to have scored 10 or more goals in two separate competitive domestic matches (English league, FA Cup, or League Cup) against two different opponents.

Scoring 10+ goals in these competitions has always been extraordinarily rare, particularly in the professional era. Extreme mismatches were more common in the very early days (pre-1900s), but even then, few clubs achieved multiple such feats in the specified competitions against different sides.

### Manchester City's Unique Achievement
- 10-1 vs Huddersfield Town (Division 2 league match, November 7, 1987).
- 10-1 vs Exeter City (FA Cup third round, January 10, 2026).

These are separated by nearly 39 years, in different competitions, against different opponents — and records consistently highlight this as a first for any English top-flight (or formerly top-flight) club in modern history. Manchester City themselves had an earlier 10-1 FA Cup win vs Swindon Town in 1930, but that would make three for them if counting all — however, the recent pair alone already stands out as unmatched by others.

### Why No Other Team Matches This
- Single 10+ wins are well-documented but isolated:
- Liverpool: 10-0 vs Fulham (League Cup, 1986) — their only one in these comps.
- Tottenham: 13-2 vs Crewe (FA Cup, 1960) — their standout, but no second.
- Various historical highs (e.g., Preston North End's massive 19th-century wins like 26-0 in an early FA Cup, or other 10+ league results in the 1880s/1890s), but these were often against amateur or very weak sides, and no club has two verified 10+ wins in league/FA Cup/League Cup against different opponents post-1888.
- The last league 10+ before City's 1987 was decades earlier; no repeats by the same team.
- Cup competitions (especially FA Cup early rounds) occasionally saw blowouts, but records show no club with multiple double-digit wins in the specified trio of competitions.

Modern football's professionalism, tactical discipline, substitutions, and sportsmanship mean teams rarely push for extreme scores even when dominating. Historical data from Opta, club archives, and football records sites confirm no other team has this double (or more) in English domestic league/cup football.

Manchester City's pair is genuinely unique across the full history — a remarkable statistical quirk in the sport!
good informative post..couple of points..noticed a bit of jealousy from other fans online highlighting money bags City in mismatch etc....but they fail to realise we ve hit 10 b4 and did that with a team full of home grown youngsters who cost nowt.

also ...off topic but thought id mention Arbroath V Bon Accord ,scottish cup tie 26-0 win late 18880s i think and.still on the record books.

I am not sure how anyone who is a City fan could not enjoy the performance of those Academy graduates, especially in the second half.
It is professional Sport, and the young kids did us proud.
Are you saying you left early because you wasn't enjoying it
Sorry, maybe i misspoke. The performance was fantastic, I just meant I felt bad for an Exeter side/support who travelled the length of the country to get utterly humiliated

I hear what you are saying mate but I won’t be shedding any tears for em, after the mauling they got yesterday.. If they had got a shock Palace type result they would have taken the piss mercilessly (fully warranted).

They showed zero class too, trying to publicly shame City into giving them all the gate receipts ..

They can go back to riding round on their tractors pissed up now trying to forget..
Cant argue with any of this either tbh.

Thought it was 36-0? Arbroath v Bon Accord. I remember this as at a junior level I once played for a team that won 32-0. Our centre forward that day scored 12!

“Everybody look up,” Caldwell demands once his dejected players are gathered after the final whistle. “That is a world class team.” And then a lesson begins. “Tell me some of their behaviours?” Silence. “Go on, tell me some of their behaviours?” “They’re relentless,” offers a voice in the corner. Precisely the answer Caldwell seeks, and he then explains the beauty in Manchester City’s simplicity. Effective; nothing flashy; and they do. Not. Stop.

Fuck ‘em. I’ve seen enough of the likes of Lincoln Bury Stockport Wycombe etc laughing their bollocks off at us.
Long coach journeys back wondering just what the fucking hell I’d watched.

One of the Arbroath - ruining Scottish football since 1885 - players (John Petrie) scored 13 so pipped your mate by 1. Rag centre forwards would be ecstatic with 13 goals over a season (or 2 if you’re unfortunate enough to be called Zirksee).

I stayed over last night, and all the Exeter fans I spoke to enjoyed the day, The Stadium, and the City.
Plenty of them at Football Museum this morning.
They liked Haaland, Semenyo, Silva, Cherki involved.

I enjoyed yesterday more than I should, because as Caldwell said it was relentless. The passing was quick, but with progression. The Academy products were consumate in their decision making, not often seen in youth.

Khusanov and Mfuni are in the CL squad. Alleyne isn’t.

Thanks for the link a d answering. My question.
Another post on a different thread said Alleyne is available because he counts due to being under 21 years old.

We also scored 11 against Palace many years ago.
