Newcastle United (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Brilliant result. Fuck var. The two young lads at CB were outstanding, lots of other very good performances, with a special mention for Semenyo, who looks like he's been here years.

Newcastle are a very physical team and we more than matched them tonight. Certainly gave as good as we got, that's not always the case, so especially pleased how we coped physically.
It’s this that pleases me most about tonight - and there’s a lot to be pleased with. You know it’s a good result when the page count is low

I posted this in the match day thread.. Haaland was offside as the line is drawn from pope as the defender was the furthest back. Therefore he was definitely in an offside position, therefore comes down to if he is interfering with play or not. Probably was to be fair, if you swapped the position of the keeper and defender it probably wouldn't have been questioned.
Yip, definitely offside
Not too dissimilar to VVD's header at our gaff

Great win but we need to stop moaning Haaland was offside. He was in front of the keeper but just behind the last defender, and the last defender might have blocked the ball without Haaland there, certainly he wasn’t with him stood there.
If Haaland wasn't there, neither is the defender as he is marking Haaland. So still wouldn't have got to it as would have been wherever Haaland was.

Yep. I think if it takes two guys with electronic equipment almost 4 minutes to see if an offence has been comitted, the majority of sensible thinkers will be of the opinion that they're looking too hard to try and justify disallowing a goal.
Exactly that. And if it's considered that crucial to the outcome of the match then you have to look at every single incident, a tackle in the middle of the park where no foul is given and it leads to a goal for example. You can't have one set of rules for one set of incidents and nothing for the rest of them, it doesn't make any sense.

How can Bernie put a performance like that at his age and given the number of games he's played over this season and last yet we say Foden looks tired...
It's a bullshit excuse for players who are in poor form. It's the tired old cliche that managers and pundits trot out and the public have bought into it.

Except he is wrong, is he not? Offside isn't judged from where the keeper is. Otherwise no goal would ever really be offside.

And that wasnt what Var were looking at when they were zooming in to see where the shadows if the studs sat.
He's not wrong. To be onside you have to be behind 2 players. Doesnt matter what 2 players. He was only behind or in line with 1 the defender. So next decision is he interfering with play, if he is goal is disallowed. As he is holding the defender then goal is correctly disallowed.

I’d be tempted to drop the big man when Marmoush gets back. The potential movement in the front 4 with Semenyo, Doku, Cherki and Marmoush is mouth watering.
no way pep drops erling no matter what his form is, i reckon hed kick off

I'm not reading the whole thread, but anyone with any complaints tonight should be in the rag thread.
Good job you didn't check in at half time then. Though to be fair it wasn't as bad as I expected.
