Newcastle United (A) | EFL Cup | Post Match Thread

Great result. So pleased for our young centre backs.

Unpopular opinion but Haaland was offside because he was ahead of the keeper, not by much mind you. It’s an odd one because we don’t see it often but the line should be drawn on Pope’s foot as he is the penultimate defender not Thiaw. The only decision they needed to make was if Haaland interfered with play. That is subjective.
Correct. Good to see some people understand the rules.

Wow you're clearly wound up haha I fucking love it.

Diddums baby.

He wasn't shit, he wasn't good either but he still put a shift in defending and holding it up. Marked by two Newcastle players every time the ball went near him. Watch the fucking game it's not just about scoring goals ffs.
Im not, im laughing at you, so its a shift now and he wasn't good, top retreating.

Newcastle defenders were defending against him? That seems unfair, why dont defenders defend against other players, thats just mean :-)

Absolutely priceless. Anyhow ive had my fun and am off to bed. You need to get back to your village, they will be worried.

Suggest you think twice about calling people fools, it didnt go great for you.

Top result tonight though.

Ttfn.

I agree on the Haaland part.....for me the attacker and defender should be allowed to compete for the ball and there is nothing wrong with that.....thats the part of the rule I disagree with.....

But by the rule as it stands Haaland is in an offside position (that part is correct)

The interfering with play bit is the part that is wrong.....its a physical, competative game and players should be allowed to do this.
This is what pissed me off. Commentators saying Haaland was stopping their centre half like it’s gospel. They both had hold of each other

MIght be wrong as I was dipping out occasionally for a beer or a piss, however, I don't recall the camera showing the city fans at any point? Contrast that to the return leg when, no doubt, we'll be subjected to excessive shots of badly dressed fat cunts singing nicked songs.

If he’s 1/2 inch offside then that’s well inside the 5cm tolerance or are we not allowed to mention that.
That decision by the officials could well be the one that hangs them all out to dry, and I sincerely hope it is. It could genuinely change how officiating is done in this country and open a right can of worms for the cartel, pl and pigmol.
I'm stil trying to work out what has actually happened with this one. It's bizarre.

Top result we can agree on.

Sleep tight

Ttfn if it means what I think it does lol

It's took me till now to calm down re that VAR. Pep called it out, we all know its bent as fuck.oʻ

Superb 1st leg performance.
Alleyene, Khusanov beasts at the back. In fact fuck it. All of them tonight.
We were a proper team and we showed that 2nd half. Onto the swamp. See you there.

I wasn’t aware of that until I heard what Lescott said and looked it up. However I don’t earn a living from football. What’s more concerning is that none of the commentators, the referee, the linesman, any of the players and both the Managers were aware of it either. It’s really quite sad.

The wording is about being nearer to the goal than both the ball second-last opponent. Keepers being ahead of another defender always confuses as it's not usual - we automatically assume keeper+1. However, it's whether he's interfering that is the issue and I don’t think he is - it's subjective, but I don't think he is and it's harsh to rule it out

Feels like a potentially pivotal moment for the club that result. Outstanding performance. Played some great football but also got absolutely stuck into those bastards and hit them at their own game.

Best away performance in years and a huge win considering the back 5 on display and a midfield of Bernardo, O'Reilly and Bernardo.

Credit to Alleyne, O'Reilly and then Rico for all getting stuck in and playing with such composure. The subs did their job and the whole team showed fight and passion to get the job done.

Semenyo showing how much more balanced we can be with width on both sides, and how important it is to get into the box from our wide. Will help Doku long term too.

Buzzing with that. Halfway to the Etihad South!

For me, the sinister aspect is that they reviewed the goal and couldn't decide if there was anything wrong with it. That being the case, why would they ask the referee to review the onfield decision. The obvious reason is to invite him to change his decision even though they can't find anything wrong with the original decision. That's abuse of the VAR system.

Pep and Bernie rightly calling out the officials and var after blatantly trying to rob us again. Like many other Blues I'm fucking sick off it. It's been going on for ten years now and it shows just how good we have been to win so many trophies with the shit we have to put up with. They can explain why that goal should have been disallowed until next year but its fucking bullshit, it should have stood. ( comments below.)

That was a great performance with a makeshift defence with two rookies at center half. They had a few chances but we thoroughly deserved to win that game and controlled it for long periods. Typical Howe team, snide fouls and play acting all game. Hes crying about his player being on the sidelines when we scored our first goals but if they didn't keep play acting he wouldn't be there. That's the rule so why even mention it?

We know how it works and it will make us stronger'

FT: Newcastle 0-2 Man City

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on Sky Sports: "Really good. We were there. First step to reach the final."

On Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo playing better after the break: "They were not completely connected. They were not ready to get that ball. Second half they were ready."

On Antoine Semenyo: "We know Bournemouth did an incredible job with him and every time the ball arrives to him he always is there."

On Semenyo's second goal being ruled out: "Four officials and VAR were not able to take the decision, they had to go to the referee. We know how it works and that will make us stronger. It's in that situation how we react. It's the semi-finals. We play for a lot to reach the finals. It will make us stronger."

0-2 Man City

Manchester City

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva, speaking to ITV Sport: "Happy but it is just one leg, we have the second at home. A very good result. It should have been 3-0 but we are quite used to this at the moment."]

More on the VAR decision: "I don't know what to say, I don't want to say too much because we know how these things work. I saw it, it looked really close to me but it is what it is. It is so frustrating because the last time we came here we also had a lot of decisions go against us.

"Even though we won it was just frustrating to be honest."

On Antoine Semenyo: "He looks not just a very good player but also a very good guy which fits right in with the team. He is a fantastic guy who wants to help us. Hopefully he can keep going."
