The Squad planning thread

Donnaruma - Trafford- Betenelli

Kyode - Khusanov
Dias - Reis
Guehi - Alleyne
Ait Nouri - Gvardiol

Rodri - Nico G
Anderson - Nico O
Foden - cherki

Olise - McAidoo
Samenyo- Doku
Haaland - Marmoush

I know that means a lot leaving but let’s be honest the squad needs rid of some deadwood, we have a lot of squad places wasted with players we can’t rely on for fitness or performance levels. Nunes, Rico, Stones, Ake, Phillips, Grealish, Bobb, Kovacic, Bernardo, Rjienders & Savinho would all need to leave(or be out of contract).
Olise? Plus phasing out Nunes is hilarious. It’s not happening with Olise until Kompany is out of contract or close to being out of contract. Nunes has better fullback numbers than most fullbacks in the world

I agree on Olise, but there is rumours of him leaving Bayern, on Nunes, he is not a fullback and we want Kayode in the summer so where does he fit?

The squad has clearly been deliberately increased in size in the last three windows, a consequence of realising that working with a small squad of the very highest quality could only take us so far; we could dominate domestically, but come spring we were regularly on our chinstraps and found wanting in Europe. Add an international competition now, where we bombed spectacularly, and the task is even more onerous.

A bigger squad may necessitate a drop off in individual quality, to be sure, but the overall quality should still be both high enough and deep enough to keep us in contention across multiple fronts. Injuries and disruptions are again spoiling this season, but sooner or later we will have more players back, and then it will be a question of seeing how well Guardiola can rotate. Reducing the squad by losing the likes of Lewis, Savinho, Nunes, Reijnders, and Bobb may make it easier for him and give us the illusion of improving the quality, but ultimately it will only see us come up short again.

So get rid of Nunes because he is not a fullback. But then in your proposed squad list above one of your RB options is Khusanov who is........a centre back. You also have Gvardiol as a LB option, even though he's a CB too.

There's more logic in keeping Nunes for RB cover, considering how well he's adapted to the position and how long he's played there, than using Khusanov for that position simply because he's fast.

Khusanov is going to be a very good CB and despite having a couple of good games versus Exeter and Newcastle, I'm not sure I'd be keeping Alleyne at this stage. Another loan to get experience and toughen up a little is the likely plan for him next season. I'd suggest the same for Reis too, with Gvardiol taking one of the CB spots.

A LB is hopepless because he played his first 90 minutes in a City shirt in a few months at RB. OK.
I didn’t say he was hopeless. I said from what we saw, he wasn’t exactly electrifying was he??
I expect he will be a solid signing once he get’s going.

“Yep pretty hopeless” is what then?

He fits. Lewis will leave or will be pushed into midfield.

we are not getting olise lol

Donnarumma
Kayode
Dias
Guehi
Gvardiol
Rodri
Anderson
Cherki
Semenyo
Doku
Haaland

As it stands seems likely for next season

Aguero & Jesus Upfront
Sane - Sterling Wing Pairing
KDB, Silva & Fernandinho In Midfield
Walker, Kompany, Otamendi In Defence
Fabian Delph as LB

This the centurion season set up for the majority of it with two up top.

Got a question:

Now as Guehi is registered for us in PL matches,
how does the City squad list AS OF TODAY look like?
Where can I look it up (it's NOT pl.co.uk)?

Did we replace Ortega or Stones or Gvardiol?
Anybody? Fact based opinions appreciated ;)

EDIT: could the journos on here ask Pep in the next presser please ;)

And in general:

are PL squad rules also in place during open transfer windows?
I'd assume so. But adjusted squad lists will be published for CL and PL when the window is shut - but what are the rules during transfer period??

I can't find anything anywhere. HELP :)

I think it's basically a free for all whilst the window is open, as nobody knows who will/won't be there at the end

That's my understanding too. You can just amend the list ahead of every January match if necessary. And since we have ample space in the prem squad (we only registered 23 players, including Mbete and Philipps. Savio and Khusanov count as U21 here and don't take up a spot), we don't need to remove anyone yet. Even easier with Guehi and Semenyo being homegrown.

The deadline for the final lists for the remainder of the season is 2 Feb. Then you should be able to find it on the official prem website @St.Pauli support.
