Atmosphere Thread | 2025/26

I agree with everything you’ve said. The one I can’t get my head around is not singing about foden.

One of our own, one of our best players over the last few years and was a major part in our success, yet we don’t sing about him.

When we do come up with a great, original chant ‘can’t start a fire’, we don’t sing it. Even when he scores a goal or he’s amazing, there’s still nothing. Other players who have only just arrrived are sung about more or United!

‘City til I die’ is our anthem for me, more than bluemoon and we’ve not sung that properly since mark hughes left. It’s baffling

Stand up if you love city is never sung either
I’ve said it on here before, “We’re not really here” is the song that gets people going the most.

Blue Moon, when sung full throated during a game where we are looking for a goal, or just scored an important one, can be rousing, but it peters off because of words….

We need CHANTS, not songs! Things can get a bit wordy, even though they’re very smart, and it’s hard to get them going!

I remember waaay back in the day, when we had the likes of a journeyman like Wyn Davies playing upfront. We’d have a little chant of:

Come on without
Come on within
You ain’t seen nothing like the mighty Wyn…
DAVIES!!

Simple chant. You sang it when he did something good, or maybe even just missed a chance and we wanted to pick him up.

Not everything needs to be Shakespeare or Keats, but a little chant for each player should be a priority, just so the fans can acknowledge a player every now and then.

And, blasphemy though it maybe, Blue Moon should be bagged off! It’s become almost parody the way it has been commercialized and transformed, almost branded, by the club!

And, lest it go without being said, my all-time favorite City song (which is used by others now) from being a kid was…

Na—
Na-Na—
Na-Na-Na-Na—
Na-Na-Na-Na—
CITY!

…to the tune of “Hey Jude.”

It has EVERYTHING needed for a good terrace chant. It rises and falls, everyone knows the words, and it ends in a chant of “CI-TY!” Yet, it’s been taken over by the pre-match recording and is rarely ever used.

Hell, even a bit of “Oh Rodney Rodney” for Erling wouldn’t go a miss!! Where’s the love for the player who has carried us on his back for the last 3 years???

Or, maybe a little “ROD-RI, there’s only one Rodri! There’s only one Rodri!”

I mean, I love Zaba almost as much as the next Didsbury resident, but fuck me!!!

The United fans only really got noisy after the second goal. They seemed to be, like us, in a state of shock. It was a strange day in many ways.
The United fans weren’t great before United scored. The Stretford End was making an effort and singing. The K-stand was quiet up to the goal.

I actually got more personal abuse after the 0-0 last April when a rag made eye contact as I was leaving the away end, and called me a blue ****.

He was obviously trying to be aggressive, but almost 61, I was quite flattered to still be relevant.

Fuck that. I was off well before the end. We didn’t even look like we were trying to score it was that bad. No chance i was staying until the end to watch them celebrate and walk back to Chorlton with all those twats. The team deserved nothing after that abomination of a performance.
I dont consider staying until the final whistle, in any game, not least an away derby, something the team should have to earn with their performance. For me that's a set in stone guarantee when I buy a ticket.

Well, fair play I hope you staying until the end made you feel good on Saturday. It made me feel better getting away before they all left and getting a pint to drown my sorrows quicker. I wouldn’t usually leave a game early but getting outfought and played by then was enough for me.

I couldn’t really give a shit how the players felt if our end was virtually empty at the end. I’m sure they still had a nice night in their mansions. When a lot of them played a derby with barely any drive or passion.Maybe it will show them how pissed off the fans were with such an embarrassing performance.

jrb - are you in a position to respond my post below?

You asked for ideas as part of the ongoing discussion. I have outlined these as requested.

It would be good to hear your thoughts.

In particular, if the focus is on what is the best opportunity to lift the atmosphere in the near future -

  1. how will the current stance to try and encourage a few more fans into South Stand lower (level ) make any real difference to the atmosphere?
  2. how will the inherent split between the South Stand lower, middle, and upper levels and Kippax corner together with the associated detrimental impact on being able to create a great atmosphere, ever be overcome?
  3. how can those fans in the SS lower ever overcome away fans from normally dominating almost all cup games in City`s so called home end (and sometimes in PL matches too) ?

"Atmosphere and the atmosphere group

It was a great result and very good performance last night, JRB.

You have asked for answers and invited me to fire away. Here are suggestions -

1.1894 take a long pause and take time to re-assess their current stance. Give careful thought to what is the best opportunity for improving the atmosphere.

2. Then, positively lead and encourage its members, to improve atmosphere and create a big home end on ONE level, by re-locating to the North Stand.

3. Positively encourage those in South Stand lower (level 0), Kippax Corner, South Stand Upper (level 3) and fans from other parts of the stadium, to establish themselves in the North Stand.

4. Promote this as a great opportunity to re-invigorate the membership and uplift the atmosphere. Pull together in the same direction.

5. Act as a conduit through City Matters to achieve the above.

Naturally some fans will want to remain where they are are for a variety of reasons. Change does not come naturally to many. However change can be the best action ever for many more.

You also mentioned the questions that had been raised and facts presented which many fans agree with.

Fundamental questions to 1894 are -
  1. how will the current stance to try and get a few more fans into South Stand lower (level ) make any real difference to the atmosphere?
  2. how will the inherent split between the SS lower, middle, and upper levels and Kippax corner together with the associated detrimental impact on great atmosphere creation, ever be overcome?
  3. how do you intend to overcome away fans normally dominating almost all cup games in City`s so called home end?
Prices
These will be announced by the club.

It is reasonable to work out that (1) the North Stand safe standing will be less than the South Stand lower (level 0) current prices; and (2) the North Stand safe standing will be no more than the current South Stand upper rear seats (rear level 3). Do you agree?

Displays / flags
There is scope for these still in the North Stand.

General Admission
9,200 approx. general admission / safe standing tickets is no more of mish mash than the current 3,000 safe standing in the SS lower ( level 0) whose profile is also mixed.

Given the above and whilst waiting for further information from the club, why did someone think that it was good idea to adopt a premature position and produce questionnaire for a limited reach too early in the process?

No one gats it right all the time and that includes the club. However lets focus on what we can do as fans. I therefore go back to point 1 above and suggest that time is now taken to re-assess the current stance and give careful thought to what is the best opportunity for improving the atmosphere now and in the future."

I may have missed your reply to me regarding the above and the issues that have been raised as part of this debate.
Please can you post it below this?
Cheers.

Hi Bert.

I appreciate the long reply.

Thank you.

But we’ve all discussed it death, and then again.

We’re now waiting on the club to announce details.

Once the club do that we can take the conversation on to the next stage.

It'll probably be a bit flat on Saturday but it's a chance to close the gap to 4 points for at least 24 hours.

If everyone can try and give it an extra 1% we'll be better for it.

We're still going through in the CL and we've only lost 1 point on the leaders this week. Not the end of the world.
I fear it will be up there with the very worst of the season on Saturday. Be very happily proven wrong.

There'll be a lot of nervous tension in the crowd on Saturday. An early City goal would settle a few nerves.

If the players aren't up for it, they shouldn't be at City. I wouldn't expect any of them to be nervous unless it filters through from the crowd.

Get right behind the lads from kick off.

As we've said turn concourse music off at 14.45pm, shut bar same time till 15.35pm, let's get in seats amd get behind lads, impossible in reality but still on for the Quad

The ultimate small time small town Wolves fans will trot out their tired old unimaginative bingo card of is this a library type songs and the will to respond (maybe briefly the will to live) will slowly drain from any blues who happen to be up for a fairly unappealing home game.

As long as they don't sing " oooooooooooooooo you're shit aaaaaagh" at The Don. Now that fucking small time lower league chant does my head in.

Heard that recently us Vs ?

Maybe daft of me, but I'm quietly confident that the atmosphere will be decent tomorrow. We've always been better when our backs are against the wall.

This game has all the hallmarks of a terrible atmosphere, so watch it be one of the best of the season

Really hope you’re right but got a feeling it will be tense and quiet unless we can get our noses in front and control the game. We need a solid performance to pick the fans up after what’s been a very disappointing few days.

So many games recently we haven’t had a shot of note and 25 mins has ticked by.

What happened to ripping into teams like we used to do. I’m sure a bit more speed and momentum would have the knock on effect on the crowd

I hark back to the Sane, Sterling, FFS, etc days of the Pep teams, when as you say, City used to rip teams apart with free flowing and attacking football that got fans excited.

Can anyone remember or pinpoint when or Pep decided to bring the current style of play into the team?

Pep calling on the city fans to support especially today and on Wednesday for 2 big finals.

He mentioned this has been the most glorious few years for success and the players need the fans as they get through this period with missing players and form
