I’ve said it on here before, “We’re not really here” is the song that gets people going the most.I agree with everything you’ve said. The one I can’t get my head around is not singing about foden.
One of our own, one of our best players over the last few years and was a major part in our success, yet we don’t sing about him.
When we do come up with a great, original chant ‘can’t start a fire’, we don’t sing it. Even when he scores a goal or he’s amazing, there’s still nothing. Other players who have only just arrrived are sung about more or United!
‘City til I die’ is our anthem for me, more than bluemoon and we’ve not sung that properly since mark hughes left. It’s baffling
Stand up if you love city is never sung either
Blue Moon, when sung full throated during a game where we are looking for a goal, or just scored an important one, can be rousing, but it peters off because of words….
We need CHANTS, not songs! Things can get a bit wordy, even though they’re very smart, and it’s hard to get them going!
I remember waaay back in the day, when we had the likes of a journeyman like Wyn Davies playing upfront. We’d have a little chant of:
Come on without
Come on within
You ain’t seen nothing like the mighty Wyn…
DAVIES!!
Simple chant. You sang it when he did something good, or maybe even just missed a chance and we wanted to pick him up.
Not everything needs to be Shakespeare or Keats, but a little chant for each player should be a priority, just so the fans can acknowledge a player every now and then.
And, blasphemy though it maybe, Blue Moon should be bagged off! It’s become almost parody the way it has been commercialized and transformed, almost branded, by the club!
And, lest it go without being said, my all-time favorite City song (which is used by others now) from being a kid was…
Na—
Na-Na—
Na-Na-Na-Na—
Na-Na-Na-Na—
CITY!
…to the tune of “Hey Jude.”
It has EVERYTHING needed for a good terrace chant. It rises and falls, everyone knows the words, and it ends in a chant of “CI-TY!” Yet, it’s been taken over by the pre-match recording and is rarely ever used.
Hell, even a bit of “Oh Rodney Rodney” for Erling wouldn’t go a miss!! Where’s the love for the player who has carried us on his back for the last 3 years???
Or, maybe a little “ROD-RI, there’s only one Rodri! There’s only one Rodri!”
I mean, I love Zaba almost as much as the next Didsbury resident, but fuck me!!!
