Spurs (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Seen a few people saying the issue is Pep not willing to change. I’d argue the complete opposite and say this season is entirely due to us fundamentally changing the way we play and we’re clearly not there yet.

You can see Ljinders influence, we’ve moved away from Peps normal style of football a fair bit. Can see where they’re trying to go with it though.
Examples?

We were building something good between October and December. We can find it again.
We were getting the results, but not really playing any better. That's why so many posters on here were quite justifiably concerned about the defence being in headless chicken mode any time that we were attacked at any sort of pace.

Occasionally a side's league position belies their standard, one way or the other. I think that ours has been higher than we could have reasonably hoped, had we known how badly we'd have been playing when looking forward to this season.

Last week, the positive vibes on here, coming from United beating Arsenal, completely ignored the fact that their performance in defeat was the complete opposite of ours, to the same opposition, just the week before.

There will likely be other days like today - some worse - before the season finishes. I just hope we also have some more good ones like stuffing Liverpool and beating Madrid at their place to go with them.

I also hope that there's some watershed moment at some point where a complete re-think is given to our tactical approach. This lack of any adaptability is the real killer for me this season. It doesn't feel like we progressed at all during 2025.

Really ? We are all getting pissed of with the officials. He should speak out. VAR was brought it to stop these mistakes now VAR is used to change games
But it feels like the players are sulking when a decision goes against them, they need to leave the moaning to us and just get on with trying to win the game.

Just on the rattler home. Title literally gifted to Arsenal not that I ever thouggt we were in it this year.
Knew that 2nd half was coming as soon as they started. It is becoming inexplicable why the levels drop so badly 2nd half.
Do not dress this up. That was a 3rd string Spurs team today who were shot in confidence so up rock City and literally gift them a point.
Fuming at how we fold like a pack of cards whenever a team come at us. Shit houses I am afraid.
Gigi, Khusa Semenyo , Cherki were good. The rest just not at it.
Haaland huffing and puffing as per fucking usual lateley but Omar gets 6 minutes. If he wants to go then let him go. His body language is so wrong.
Rjeinders. Such a piss poor signing as Ait noiri has been. No where near the levels we need.
The 2nd goal. Nico Reilly has to fucking take.control and head it rather than let it bounce.
1st time I have thought this but todays 2nd half has made me realise we need a fresh voice ans different ideas now. Pep will always be a legend for me and if he stays then so be it but I am not adverse to a change come summer.
The 2nd goal is squarely on Gonzalez. The state of that for a PL CM.

He was poor and needs to shut up.
He’s 100% correct, didn’t have his best game however, since Pep called out the standard of refereeing in the prem, we have been on the receiving end of a few strange decisions.
Just got back home from the game in time to see motd review their 1st goal, and they all agreed the goal should have stood.
Absolute bollocks! And it’s a foul anywhere else on the pitch.
Rodri has the right to be incensed, and it’s about time someone spoke out.

Ever since last season this team has a serious mentality problem no amount of money and fans shouting will change that. Arsenal have begged us to take the title multiple times and the team has refused to take it. Theres genuinely no solution. There’s no excuses. We changed the system 4222 OR played with Rodri and we still were overrun in midfield. We have a new CB and we still blow 2-0 leads. We haven’t scored a 2nd half goal this year. It’s pointless talking about Haaland and co when he’s just gonna keep playing and bag a goal every few games. The writing is on the wall, this has to be Pep’s last year. The players clearly need a change. We have incredible players. That should be challenging on all fronts:

I’m not sure,

I see a coach obsessed with “control’, with no acknowledgement that we simply don’t have players good enough to do that anymore.

We need to completely drop this attitude of trying to take the sting out of games, or going one up then dawdling about for 40 mins after, and then when the tempo of the game goes up we simply can’t react.

If Pep really wants that pass, pass, pass control, then the players you sign have to reflec that.

Some recent ones couldn’t control a pass never mind a game.

He didn't complain at the time, and after 50 replays it isn't clear and obvious.

Why does he garb hold of players every match now? Blame the ref when you are a liability rather than trying to improve, easier to fly and watch the NFL.

Yes! You get a yellow card or a red card if it’s warranted but if the ball isn’t in play then there’s no different way of putting it back into play, it’s not a foul.

It’s literally the first line of the laws on fouls and misconduct.

I haven’t watched it back yet to see if they were right to say it wasn’t in play.
You’ve argued that they were right, but you haven’t seen anything to say that they were?

Is this the Haaland one, where he was wrestled to the ground by 2 players? Have we seen a full image of the incident yet?

Today was a really important game and feel that we needed to be on the front foot, ‘at it’ and aggressive. We should have put a decimated team to the sword. We didn’t, we weren’t at it, but still found ourselves 2-0 to the good at half time. That second half performance was a real worry, given how poor Spurs were.

‘Don’t normally question the manager, but being in Barcelona in the buildup to today, just was not right. Whilst he has a great team around him and Pep Lijnders is a capable deputy, I feel it doesn’t convey the right message, especially with our own injury issues and new signings, and I’m surprised the club sanctioned it. Pep G should have spent the last few days obsessing (as he is famed for) about winning at Spurs, not reflecting on Palestine. I know he was particularly ‘Hollywood’ in front of the cameras today and looked furious in the post match presser, but he took his eye off the ball this week. Pep of old would not have had the headspace for the Middle East during a football season.

Semenyo was absolutely fucking awful

The entire way we transition has changed both ways and the players we’ve been recruiting are the obvious ones, we’re more happy to give up the midfield than we ever were before.
We aren’t “giving up midfield”, we don’t have the quality of player to control the midfield like we used to.

We’ve gone from prime Kev, Rodri and Gundogan to the likes of Reijnders, Lewis, a worn out Bernardo and a past it Rodders. That combination could control a midfield in the Championship mate.

Secondly, there is no difference in how we transition. We are still playing the slow, methodical “move up the pitch” method we have for years.

What's more worrying than the second half is the first IMO, I can't remember a time a team has looked as bad as Spurs did and we just didn't going for the kill, we were literally SLOWING the game down pretty much to a halt for no reason at all.

We can talk about the tactics all day on if pep wanted them to slow the game down, but any half decent team would of picked up on the pitch how shit spurs were and just went "Lads, lets just beat them by half time".
Watched the highlights of Bristol City v Derby over the weekend - Derby did exactly what you want - they continued to go at Bristol and scored five goals (away from home) and were still searching for more.
