VAR Discussion Thread

Is Sloboslai the first player to be sent off for DOGSO when a goal was actually scored then disallowed- apologies if already posted but a great future quiz question
Its an unusual situation.
The only team that benefit are dippers next opponents.
We"re down a goal, they're down a player for the next game and brentford are gone down a position in the league.

I wonder what would have happened if the pull by Haaland had happened 10 yards further back or much nearer to the half way line and there was no chance of Szolozabal stopping the ball?

With regards to the liv city game... The fact that PGMOL will rule that VAR made the correct call will perversely be used to prove that VAR does work after all!

It's supporters are so blind (and too easily convinced) to what it is doing to the game.

Yes, I think this pursuit of ultimate precision by VAR is destroying the spontaneous drama, emotion, adrenaline, and celebration that made many of us fall in love with the sport. It's hard to deny that football matches were more enjoyable as a spectator sport pre-VAR.

A referee now hardly ever stands by his original decision when asked to review on-screen. This means for a football fan, there's an approx. 95-98% chance he will change his mind once he get's the VAR whisper in his ear. We basically know whether to cheer or groan before he even approaches the screen.

My real problem here is that many of the VAR reviews are for subjective incidents. The factual ones (offside, penalty decisions, ball crossing goal-line) do not typically require the ref to review the off-field monitor.

Many of the subjective reviews are for incidents such as handball (natural position of the arm etc.), fouls in build-up play, violent conduct, serious foul play or interference with play during a goal scoring opportunity. Knowing that a referee changes his mind during VAR review almost 98% of the time, it's not difficult to presume that when a referee approaches the screen he does so with 'a presumption of error'.

The specific problem with subjective incidents such as those mentioned above, are that all of these reviews are being raised by 2* guys in Stockley Park on the basis of 'clear and obvious error'. If their interpretation of an unnatural arm position is enough to raise a review, you can be pretty much assured that the ref will not overrule it. VAR are also advised that if an incident is a 'matter of opinion' where two reasonable people could disagree, they should leave it alone. They clearly do not do this.

Nobody can seriously believe that the on-field referee 'truly' agrees with VAR subjective review calls 95-98% of the time. Yet we're also led to believe that the referee has full and final authority. It's all a bit of a mess.

*There are three guys per match at Stockley, but one's basically a techie that sorts the camera angles/video for review etc.

Amongst the many things you said that I agree with it is this bit that annoys me most about VAR... We can see that mechanic (of VAR basically telling the ref what the decisions is) hence I think PGMOL would be aware of it. Those VAR refs in effect can control the game.

Finally found the Morgan Rogers foul on Gvardiol from earlier in the season. How does VAR not give this? How does the ref not see it anyway?

Plus their goal from a corner I think where it should have been a free kick to us from memory. But Oliver and Dipper Brooks on Var. Usual officiating that 2 huge calls were wrong and both against us, we somehow made twice as many fouls as them and 4 yellows before their stat paddling late 1 card

For which the ref waved play on. 2nd foul was by Erl
And ?
(No offence stoner)
I still don't get people stating its the rules and therefore correct.
Corners are the best example of refs letting things go and Var not getting involved.
If we had been nil-nil or worse, one nil down, not one City fan would have said 'well it's the law'.
The entire game is built around goals and yet Var search for a reason to deny them

No matter what PGMOL might claim, 1 incident which VAR got right when compared to the seemingly endless list of "highly debatable" decisions which they have delivered proves that whilst the system may work, the operatives are totally incompetent at best, or simply corrupt.

No gloating warranted here for Webb and acolytes.

A former regular contributor to this thread insisted that VAR had killed off diving. It certainly hasn’t.

Salah’s mysterious ability to feel slight pressure and throw himself in the opposite direction continues to marvel.

As does “contact” which would not result in a foul anywhere on the pitch miraculously becoming significant in the penalty area.

Yep. Var will stop diving...... so we were told.
Fuck right off with that one.
On here we slag Pawson but credit where it's due, he refused to cave in to that fuckers cheating.

Exactly. I'm not going down the rabbit-hole conspiracy theory that the VAR guys just raise issues dependant upon a particular team that's playing, it's the obvious problem that referees are basically accepting the premise that they're incorrect 98% of the time when asked to review a decision raised by VAR. If we were incorrect (or made 'clear and obvious' errors) in our decision making 98% of the time during our normal day to day jobs we'd be let go and told to look look for a new one. Appraisal time would be funny as fuck.

We hate it.
The pundits think it’s wank.
Increasingly despised by managers and players.
So, how do we get rid of it?
Not change it, not modify it.
Fucking bin it.
It’s up to us, the true fans. Not the wankers that don’t go to the match, not the wankers who love cricket and tennis. Us, the lads who’ve watched the game hime and away for decades. Who went mental when we scored. No flag ball in net go ballistic
It’s up to us

It`s one of the reasons I gave up my season ticket after many many years,It has killed the joy of being at the match and the sheer joy of a goal ,if you remove that from the game what`s left ? staring at a huge screen waiting for VAR to ok it or not ? fuck that ,the telly punters have more than I did in the ground ,I`d genuinely bin it or keep the decisions to a minimum ! Not what I witnessed on Sunday ,even ratboy agrees it should have been a goal ffs .
