2026 Rugby League Season

Taylor Wray has been lightning quick. The first half was as good as wire have played for a few years.

Get in there, Wire!

Weathered a Saints storm in the 40-60minute part of the game but played really well for the other hour of the game.

Certainly did. Saints didn't look to have met each other, and had no plans.
The Warrington fullback's speed was quite something though.

Yeah he’s got a lot of good buzz around him but he did his hamstring a few times last season. Hopefully, he’s put those injuries behind him now.

Good opening weekend.

York, Warrington and Toulouse all won against the odds. And even in defeat, Bradford beat their -15 odds with a 7 point defeat.

Leigh looked good,

Cas v Wigan was a struggle with a poor Jungle pitch and the ref just ignored the quicker ruck from the other games and let both teams lie on too long. Wigan made it look easy in the end though.

One of the best things though was the crowds. York with nearly 9k for their first top flight game in 40 years, Wire with their best crowd in 50 years (15k), Wakey nearly getting 9k with next to no away fans and nearly 17k at Hull. With Leeds, Wigan, Saints, Rovers, Toulouse and Bradford having their first home games still to come, and there’ll be a top crowd in Hull for the World Club Challenge this week.

This after last season that saw the largest average attendances since before Covid… and all this is with a lack of marketing over the off-season through the Winter by the RFL.

Good start to the season!

Hull KR v Brisbane in the World Club Challenge tonight, at a sold-out 25,000 Hull FC’s MKM Stadium.

7.30pm kick off for this one (for anyone used to tuning in at 8pm for games!)
It’s on BBC Three and Sky Sports +

Rovers started their season with a poor performance in defeat at York in Week 1, after they asked the RFL to give them an ‘easy’ game ahead of this WCC.
Brisbane have only played pre-season games so far but beat Canterbury 30-14 and Sunshine Coast 26-14 last week.

Don’t know when Brisbane travelled, but they’ve been staying in London for their training ahead of the game. They’ve been the most exciting team to watch for a few years in the NRL. They have the best forward in the world in Payne Haas (who’s signed for Souths for 2027) and arguably the most exiting rugby player in the world in Reece Walsh.
Arguably Rovers have been the most exciting team to watch over the last few years here n’all.

Should be a cracker.

Rovers have made the MKM red for the pre-game display:

Hull fans aren’t happy that Rovers are playing at their ground. Some bitter comments online about it, but found this AI generated image funny from one of their fans:

Don’t think Brisbane will be overawed with the atmosphere. They’re the biggest supported club in rugby league.

There’ll be 25k there tonight but Brisbane get over 50k for their big home games, with an average of 37k. That 52k they got for their home semifinal last season against Penrith was electric (although a different kind of atmosphere with much more shouting and geeing up, rather than singing like our atmospheres).

Tuning in on BBC 3. Can't wait.

What a start for Rovers!

However, Brisbane came back from 28-12 down to win 28-29 in the first round of the Play-offs at Canberra, came from 0-14 down to win 16-14 against Penrith in the semis and came from 22-12 down to win the Grand Final 22-26 last season.

They like a challenge.

Just switched on and 3 tries in 5 minutes for Brisbane. I’ve jinxed Hull KR !

Brisbane started the comeback five minutes too late. As we always say every year, a fully season fit NRL side would win this pretty much every season, they always play these in their pre-season and often look undercooked… but it’s still always good to get one over on the Aussies.

16-12 to English sides in this now.

A very entertaining game and well done the Robins. It helps to maintain the relevance of the Super League on the back of the Ashes thrashing.
