Old Maine Road photos thread

Such a lovely man, Roy Clarke. He registered me as a Junior Blue and a member of the Social club within four hours of me being born.

It would have been sooner but my dad wasn't allowed to make the 15 minute walk back from St Mary's to wet the baby's head, until my mum said he could go.

When I became a cub reporter, he would let me use his office to file copy and always looked out for our family, living across from the stadium.

It was only in later life when my dad was informed Bert Trautmann was his dad that it sort of made any sense for us why him and Ken Barnes gave a shit about us.

Roy was an absolute gentleman and bizarrely, near the end of his time, I would run in to him in Sale at Brooklands gym.

He never forgot who I was and asked how we were getting on.

He knew my dad and our family had been dealt a shitty hand and seemed to take pity because Trautmann wasn't the person many thought he was.

I was at that Palace game in the home end, think it was Easter and we won by a few Quinn and White scored I seem to remember

My dad used to chat to him most days in the gym. Apart from saying what a lovely and personable guy he was, which you know better than me, he told him smiling how Roy Paul would always try to kick lumps out of him in training and tell him he was coming for him. A bit of welsh banter!

Sorry to hear that mate. Your Dad clearly turned out a good 'un despite those difficulties!
He's a proud man, too proud sometimes.

All adopted kids want to know where they come from?

His wider family didn't tell him until he was 43 He was his first born but let's just say my dad wasn't convenient for an already married man in 1950.

He's still going at 75 this year and a dead ringer for him. Hands like shovels, but that's all he shares with an incredibly arrogant man who didn't want to know him when he made contact, despite the best efforts of Ken Barnes down the years.

Yep, think those Welsh lads were hard as nails.

Roy jokingly used to tell me a story when I was a kid that he knocked himself out at Villa Park one year at an FA Semi-Final, trying to head a post?

Fucking hell mate, that’s a crazy story to read.

As a father myself I’ve never understood that sort of behaviour.

Disappointing to read about one of the club’s biggest legends.
