47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

Has looked a different player since he won the POTY award a couple of years ago.Seems to be overthinking the game now,not playing as naturally as he was pre award.Could be that title has weighed him down, with the expectations that come with it?…

I just always thought he was a system player - and when the system works that he is fantastic.
When the system is struggling, when the really big players grab the bull by the horns and drag us to victory, Foden struggles and disappears.

And that's exactly what has happened to him the past 18 months.

I dont like swearing, but what a pile of shite that is.

he is one of our most effective players, in a system that works well, and when the going gets tough.

All players will have a time in their career where things go hit and miss, and its well known he is having some off the field issues.

But saying he struggles and disappears is mental, look at players like KDB were not all that and then boom back in the game.

Nah, I don't agree at all. He's been all but invisible for 18 months. He had a purple patch before that.

He is a system player and where the very best stand up, he has disappeared.
He is literally world's away from being 'one of our most effective players'. Just an utter fantasy statement.

The stick he's getting on here is pathetic.

He's still only 25, TWENTY FIVE.

He's been absolutely brilliant and deserves our full support with whatever is going on with him.

Personally I think like the club & Pep he's in transition himself. He's grew up and played with the likes of D.Silva, Gundogan, Fernandinho, KDB, and Rodri around him. He's not had a solid settled midfield behind or with him for 18 months due to the loss of Rodri and the aging of the others.

He's too technically gifted and class for him to be written off.

Hopefully he doesn't go to the World Cup and he gets a summer break.

Kid will be back and in the next 7 years plus he'll go down as the most decorated Manchester City player of all time.
Should be entering his prime and not looking like a average PL player.

bollocks, thats it.

He's also not been given a consistent run of games in the same position and hasn't been played as our left-sided 8 for a while now, which is imo, his best position. He was running games in sept/oct/nov and is out of form at the moment, but he'll come back into it

Very simplistically, it seems to me the move central has reduced his influence. We thought he would flourish but the opposite had happened. I'd go back to basics and have him playing that half space on the right where he can cut in and shoot.

Like everyone? It's a team sport.

Haaland is a world class striker but he can't score without someone passing him the ball.

Rodri's the best DM in the world but without some legs around him he looks lost and slow.
Not like everyone. Rodri will still do what he does even without legs around him. Haaland will literally score even if the guys behind him ain’t in good form like how they were at the start of the season. Of course everyone is dependent on others but the position where u shouldn’t depend on others the most is exactly Foden‘s Position. The 10. you are supposed to carry. And Foden is doing nothing even with a solid midfield behind him.
There’s a reason the counter turned out horrible when he had the ball and could pass it to 3 colleagues but instead chose to slow it down passed it back to reijnders for absolutely no reason.

If some here keep mentioning that he’s silva‘s heir or something then he is not supposed to be carried by those around but lead by example

After some time we should come to the conclusion that it’s not because he‘s actually a left 8 or RW or because Cherki is taking his position or because of some Bellingham’s and saka‘s but because of HIM.

Spot on. He’ll probably start scoring again soon and when he does great because it will help us.People will then start saying he’s back. In reality it will take more than a few goals to show he is because he looks an absolute shadow of the player he was. Or looked like he could become a few years ago.

That’s the thing. I wasn’t even impressed at the start of the season because in games like against Palace he didn’t do shit all game and then scored and apparently he had a better game than Cherki who was the only vocal point.
The worst thing is that people still claim that he’s creative.

Really hope he doesnt go to the world cup , sitting on the bench for a month will do him no good , he needs a complete break , he didnt get one last year due to the CWC , he is 25 and played and played over 350 top level games for a top six european club , his achievements have been phenomenal and he needs to be cut a little slack.
He looks lost at the moment with little confidence and appears to be going through the motions , one of the best sights in a blue shirt in full flight and brimming with confidence is Phil Foden , absolutely no chance i will be suggesting he finds another club because of a loss of form. He's a blue through and through and gives everything and the thought of him leaving our club would be a travesty , but we dont want another Deli Ali or Rashford burnt out after ten years of football.
Give him a couple of months break and ease back into the team next season , for the rest of this season in his current form he's a bit part player from the bench.

I’m not sure if this is controversial, but I’m convinced this whole “he’s going through personal things” is a cop out for his poor form and his inability to get off social media.

Before Twitter made likes private, Foden would constantly like tweets about himself. He’s one of those players who continually searches himself on social media. During the Euros he got destroyed. I don’t even think it was so much his own poor performances but the tribal nature from other fans who would pit him against Saka, Palmer, and Jude. All those players had their own moment during the Euros while Foden didn’t and was criticized for that. He saw that and it strongly affected him. This was confirmed by his own teammates.

Another thing is if you really want to maximize Foden, then you have to build your football around him. He’s someone who wants to stand between the lines, receive the ball on the half turn, then shoot from the edge of the box. When it works it’s great. However, that’s the most congested space in football and you need defensive players who are elite at breaking lines to find you in those pockets. Rodri was amazing at that and it’s no surprise Foden’s form fell off a cliff after Rodri got injured.

The thing is if Foden isn’t receiving the ball in those pockets then he’s going to have a quiet game. He himself said in an interview a few weeks ago that opposition are always marking him at the edge of the box which wasn’t the case a few years ago. He’s also a player who is heavily affected by confidence. Look at the way he plays after scoring a goal in a game vs when he doesn’t score. It’s night and day.

Another thing that’s bothered me is that this season there have been times where he has received the ball in those pockets and he just passes the ball backwards. Idk if that’s because he wants to show he has “pausa” to Pep or, and you might think this is ridiculous but knowing Phil it might actually be true, he’s seen comments about haters calling him a “turn and shoot merchant” and he’s trying to prove them wrong. It might sound ridiculous but I genuinely wouldn’t put it past him. He needs to delete those apps off his phone.

If City didn’t have Cherki, then Foden would be getting a lot more flak for his form over the last 2 months than he currently is. No one is held to a higher standard in football than an underperforming #10.

The system player bullshit was made up by arsenal fans who were criticising his England performances and saying saka was 'clear'
