City bus scheme for home games

For evening matches when I can't get a train home, I've started using the 10 from Hale - handy for the motorway and an EV charger nearby, plus train option if needed. And then last Saturday as usual I used the train but with the train replacement bus from Stockport.

What struck me whilst stuck in traffic on both routes is the lack of bus lanes.The bus just becomes another vehicle clogging up the road. I don't advocate bus lanes where it then reduces cars to a single lane - but there has been loads of work on Chester Road (and elsewhere) over the years, cycle tracks put in both sides (that is a good thing) but nothing to create a way in which using the bus is more convenient and reliable than using a car.

It all feels very shortsighted. There are major plans to extend the tram system and I see one proposed busway out to Middleton, but that is all.

Anyway, glad to see the Matchday Bus option and people using it (I couldn't get a seat going home last Wednesday) here's hoping that as the stadium expands new options will be created - but until the whole infrastructure is upgraded we are still going to get stuck in traffic like last Wednesday night.

Hello, the MC17 starts at East Lancs but the MC11 starts in Tyldesley. I am not sure if that’s any better for you, but I can certainly raise your question though to see if there’s an option to have a bus starting from Leigh.

You raise some good and valid points, I’ll pass this on to the relevant people. I will also have a look at the capacity on the 10 too! Thanks for the information.

It’s a catch 22 situation. Bus lanes are just half-arsed around GM but personally I think there should be more and if it reduces cars to a single lane I don’t see a problem, however car drivers do and vote for the next local candidate who says they will overturn them so councils don’t bother. And then drivers are the first to complain about traffic! They don’t seem to make the connection between giving people better public transportation and reduced number of cars on the road and that fewer cars = less traffic congestion.

Car ownership is stable or increasing but Manchester City Council strategy is to reduce car travel particularly in the city centre. If you use the matchday buses, it is obvious that their performance is impaired by car congestion. The graphic below illustrates commuting habits now, and how the authorities think they will change.

Formally, Manchester City Council is currently engaged in a public consultation on a Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2050 but in practise the population is not involved and they remain in love with the car whilst the state is trying to nudge them out of it.

Whats the thinking behind the 2 different prices for these 2 buses.
If getting on the 11 from wardley its £8 if getting on the 17 from wardley its £4
Also I noticed the 17 is pre paid only , does that mean you'll be refused access if you haven't pre booked on it or can you pay cash to the driver ?
 
Out of interest, the bus that leaves Hale and picks up on Brooklands Road, anyone tell me how full it gets and how’s the journey?
I usually travel by an official supporters club bus from Stretford and Urmston, but drive from Brooklands to meet mates and take the OSC bus.
Night matches are a pain to make the OSC bus in time and I usually then drive, parking in a community centre next to The Townley Pub (£15).

You want the one that starts in Timperley and picks up on Brooklands Road. The Hale one goes via Sale West and then Stretford

Hello, the 17 is the same price as a the 11 from Wardley, the £4 price listed on the website is the price from Victoria. MC17 was originally a direct shuttle from Victoria which could only be prebooked. However, due to capacity issues on MC11 we extended the 17 to give passengers an alternative option and tickets can now be purchased onboard the bus. The website should have been updated with this information, I will chase this up.

Do you know about the road closure in Macclesfield that will impact matchday bus 8 tommorow?
Manchester road prior to the stop in tyherington is shut. The bus will have to divert along the Silk Road to pick up first stop and then again when picking up on Manchester road Tyherington.
This could add 20 mins+ to a very short journey
Please can the bus driver be made aware and arrive especially early for first pick up and then be made aware of diversion required to get to second stop
