Newcastle United (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Barcodes were just getting as many crosses into the box as possible , they have to be physically the biggest team in the league but we stood up to the bombardment , they could not play through us so they resorted to Wimbledon tactics. We had a few chances in the 2nd half in transition to put the game to bed and calm our nerves , but our final pass or shot was poor on the night.
Our battling qualities are the reason i am not worried about teams like Leeds next week , our previous title winning teams just passed teams off the park , this team is different , more direct and more combative , so if teams want to fight us , bring it on. Players like Rodri , O'Reilly , Bernardo , Haaland , will not be intimidated by rough house tactics.
Pleasantly surprised we are in the title hunt , didnt expect it this season , credit to Pep for driving this team on.

Dan Burn. Heard a few say he should have been sent off. But why?

And would it have been before the bernado foul on him?
After his first half booking the most notable was the shirt pull and trip near the touch line , centre back pulling shirts and tackling from behind normally leads to a yellow , think the ref was lenient. The in the last ten minutes a cross came in and Burns left Haaland poleaxed and in a heap in the box , he charged into back of Haaland.
Burns was lucky to get away with just one yellow card.

He should’ve gone later when he pushed him out the pitch after the ball had gone for a throw in, it was dangerous play

The treble winning side wasn’t the treble winning side until they won the treble.

They weren’t the treble winning side before Christmas.

Then Cancelo went and Stones became a marauding midfielder and the world would never be the same again.

The team grew.

The dream, however unlikely, is still alive.

Football in premier was different then! teams didn’t go at us like they do now, the team had years of experience we controlled games better. This team is young, like pep said 60/70% of our team are new! There is so more variables now in games! Throwing balls in pen area set pieces all going in the box that then is about winning the second ball and chance % is pretty even! There goal was that a ball in the box then a deflection! That last save from Donno was just a ball landing near the Newcastle player he just hit it! That football is the old fashioned kick and rush balls in the box as much as possible % chances! Arsenal under Arteta has brought I back plus PGMOL changes is benefiting this type of football!

Agree with everything, but for me Bernardo has reached a higher level in games against the best teams in the world, including skills wise, than David or Yaya. He has scored more goals at Anfield, Old Trafford and Bernabeu than some of our older legends combined.

For example, his run at Anfield, where he dribbled past 5-6 Liverpool players including VVD, would have finished with the best assist in PL history had Foden scored from that chance. Or his performances against Bayern or Real in the treble season where he was MOTM in 3 of the 4 games against them.
Spot on. He's been quality since the day he arrived. Not only extremely skillful but also the ultimate team player. Imho, and based on how good he's been this season, another season wouldn't go amiss, given how young this team is.

And, what a leader!

any pics?

I'll run through the full match replay on the OS and get back on this one. It was in the second half. I give full credit to Newcastle for giving us a hell of a game, but my clear impression was that they had been told — or had collectively decided, more probably — to rough us up much more in the second half. They were sharing out the yellow cards very cunningly.

67m40 seconds, and following, when they slow it down. Take a look if you've recorded, or look at it on the OS. I was wrong about one thing, the ball was close, in fact Erling was heading it away. Burn has no chance of winning it, he knows it, and in fact what I missed was he clearly sticks his elbow as he jumps into Erling's spine. It hurt Erling, and he had to be held back and calmed by Khusa.

The last 15 years is the abnormality!
I’m just enjoying it while it lasts.

Hah, that is certainly a legitimate way of looking at it. Right there with you mate. Most of us will probably never see a period as dominant and generally fucking fantastic as City under Pep for as long as we remain on this earth, and it won't be appreciated fully by the wider footballing world for a generation at least.

an entertaining game if a little too entertaining for my liking
but tbf they really didn't give too many hearts in mouth moments whilst we had ample opportunities to put it to be bed
over to you gooners

A man that's going under the radar in a number of these posts. Bernardo Silva, who for nearly nine years has run his socks off all over the pitch, maintaining possession, giving us options, harrying, playing short cunning balls, playing defensive midfield or out on the wing or wherever Pep has wanted to him. He did it last night, for the umpteenth time. When he goes, we'll understand what we had. He's not quite up there with Merlin and Kev in his skills, but in his importance to the team he's been every bit as important.
Since this may be his last season, I'll say it again, and I'll keep repeating the accolade — a great servant to the club, and a very fine footballer.
Thing is with Bernardo is that he doesn’t look that good on the TV. You don’t appreciate just how good he is and how much work he does until you watch him live. He’s been utterly outstanding this season in the central role

He was, but that’s not what a goalkeeper is for.

It’s like saying a boxer has great footwork but he can’t punch and can’t take a punch.

Donnarumma absolutely shits on Ederson imo.
We're at cross purposes mate

I'd much rather we had Donnarumma but quite often the team seem to be playing as though we've still got Ederson

I'd love nothing more than watching Bernie lift that title, he deserves it and what a send off it would be for him.

Premier League Title in one hand and a Cuppa Tea in the other for his statue.
He won’t be able to hold a cuppa with all the other trophies in his hand

I always think whenever we play liverpool, he turns into something else!
That run in 21/22 or I remember even in lockdown he was just going past players like they weren’t even there.
Those two goals against Madrid, two of the biggest goals in our history, not just that, thought he was monumental against Bayern in the quarters aswell, I mean it’s going to be a very unpopular opinion (and I would probably disagree too) to say he has surpassed King David, but judging on the trophies he’s won, the vital goals he’s scored and the workrate he’s put in (the 2-1 win over liverpool at the etihad in 18/19, he never stopped running.)

David was absolutely magical, probably my favourite city player ever, but wow bernie is just incredible sometimes.

I actually thought bernado was MOTM last night

Great win, not a good performance but who cares.
However there is definitely an issue with 2nd half performances.
I thought yesterday that we would coast through the game as we had a weeks rest and toon had a long trip in midweek.
But again we struggled, the question is why does is keep happening.
I disagree, it was a very good, solid performance in a very tough game.

The bonus of course is that our next three games really ought to yield nine points. Huge pressure on Arse now, and I think Spuds will nick a draw tomorrow. One thing's for sure, they'll give it everything.
Unfortunately the spuds will get annihilated mate.. They are nowhere near the arses level ..
Hope I’m wrong though :-)
