I’m never quite sure whether to click ‘like’ on posts about cancer, it feels slightly strange to ‘like’ something connected to such a cruel and indescrimate disease.

Sadly, I just lost my Dad to cancer on Monday. It was one of the more treatable types, but he kept it to himself for 2 years because he was afraid of hospitals.

Best of luck to all those who are battling with it and fingers crossed that you beat it. And to all those others, please get checked out regularly. These PSA and other checks are readily available and relatively cheap.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, it does seem to be a male thing to be reluctant to get checked out, my brother in law was the same and left it too late. As would I have done without a persistent locum doctor who said the PSA reading was borderline but worth referring to be on the safe side

Just been diagnosed with prostate cancer I'm 64 given 3 options observation and test every 3 months, surgery or radiotherapy, I've got a hip replacement booked for Tuesday so will have a think about it probably go with the observation and see if levels go up then go for surgery, anyone else given options.
How you doing mcgrathc hope your OK buddy.

I'm 66, diagnosed in Feb this year with a gleeson score of 3+4 (benign and confined to the prostate) I was offered the same treatments as yourself and have opted for active surveillance with a current psa of 6.6. The side effects of the other 2 didn't appeal to me. So I'll wait until I need to do something and by then treatment will have improved.
Just as a note, I have recently purchased a pension annuity and my condition didn't increase it nor when I renewed my annual travel insurance that didn't go up by much.
BTW I don't have any of the classic symptoms either!

I am 61 and was diagnosed with PC last July (2024). I went on active surveillance and everything was sweet until the last couple of PSA checks were up.I wasn’t doubling but it wasn’t settling. As I am relatively young and it is still localised I am having my prostate removed next Tuesday (4th). I would go with the observation and get used to the idea you have cancer then decide from there. But it’s obviously down to you.

I was very much like you on this and I still don’t fancy the surgery I’m having next week but my brother dies this year (not from cancer) aged 67 and I just thought I should get it sorted. I don’t think I would have despite the increase in my PSA.

Been right through our family my dad passed last year with liver cancer and his dad died with lung cancer.Also my mam has had breast cancer and both me and my brother have had prostate cancer sometimes its in the genes i think they call it the brca gene which increases the risk of getting different types of cancers.

I posted a bit ago after my hifu treatment. My psa pre op was 3.30. Told last week it had dropped to 0.40. Pleased as punch. Appointment on Tuesday with the surgeon. Get my MRI result at the same time. Hopefully good news going forward. Mate of a mate asked for one. His was 60.00. No symptoms. So Gents of a certain age. Get one done. You are entitled to one so don't let them fob you off.

Giving this a bump as we ALL need to get checked. In January I went in for a blood test just to check my cholesterol level, it had been nagging away at me for ages, and surprisingly that had dropped from the last test 8yrs ago. But they flagged up my psa level (which I'd never had checked) and this was around the 23 mark. High.

I've had an MRI and that showed up quite a large prostate gland, with today being the biopsy procedure. Hopefully I never have to do that again. Results to follow.

50% of men around my age (60) have it, many with little to no symptoms, so catching it early is crucial. And if I hadn't been curious about my cholesterol then I would still be walking around in ignorant bliss.

It takes 30secs to get some blood into the vials.

Great post and all the best mate. My dad had it had radiotherapy sessions and got the all clear in 2019. Unfortunately he passed away in Jan 2021 Covid and pneumonia. Was told on the night he died that he had stomach and blood cancer, only symptom he mentioned to us 3 weeks prior was he had an awful stomach pain like a hernia.

Thanks. Sounds like a tough time for you and dad, I hope you managed to get to be with him what with the lockdowns and restrictions with hospital visits. I missed that opportunity with my dad and despite not having the best of relationships with him, I did feel it incumbent of me to see him over the line. But it was middle of the night and you can't be there all the time you know? Take care fella.

My best mate just been diagnosed with it. Routine PSA test after Dr sent him for PSA test just as a precaution. Got it early so monitored every 3 months.
SO GET YOURSELF CHECKED OUT BLUES.

I unfortunately have terminal prostate cancer but in aid of the prostate cancer uk charity I have been asked if MCFC could accommodate a volunteer walk which takes in a number of sporting venues the reason for my post is to ask if anyone could direct me to someone within City who can hopefully help me out and make this happen as part of the walk it would mean such a lot to me and would be greatly appreciated by all the people who are walking in support of PCUK please help me out if you can thank you

Stay positive, my best mate was diagnosed with terminal PC 11 years ago, he genuinely thought he had limited years left, he’s still here, there’s plenty of hope to hang your hat on, very best wishes to you.

Totally echo all the sentiments shared on here.. Devestating news for the boys who have received the diagnosis.
M55 Here... insisted on my PSA, came back normal, went for the old finger up the bum and although I have a slightly enlarged prostate, theres nothing to worry about for the time being, but at least ive the peace of mind...do yourself a favour and phone your doc Today and insist on your PSA!!! keep this thread going!!!!
