Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

Got told recently that the reason Labour didn't allow burnham to run wasn't mainly due to the threat of a leadership challenge, it was because they were shitting themselves they'd lose the manchester mayor to reform. Don't know if true but the person does know what they're on about usually, and it makes sense. Losing a flagship major like manchester would be devastating for labour (and for manchester).
It would have been far more devastating to lose the Greater Manchester region to Reform along with control of billions of regional funding for the next 4 years, which all polling indicates would have happened.

Labour now as short as 4/1 in places after being as long as 10/1 earlier in the week. While the odds have shifted a bit on the Greens and Reform over the past few days - Greens drifting slightly and Reform shortening slightly - the shifts aren't anywhere near as big as what we've seen with Labour
Interesting piece on Times Radio yesterday about the odds. In short they said that very few people bet on by elections and quite often a party will put bets on to bring the price down to send a message to potential undecided voters who want to be on the winning side. They said Reform may have a problem as for some unknown reason in by elections voters want someone local who they can connect with, Greens vote may be split which will allow Labour to retain the seat. An interesting 24 hours ahead of us.

Abbey Hey, round Sunny Brow and High bank way could well stay labour, not really any indication as not many posters up, but from talking to local CLP members who all love round there they don't feel support has been lost amongst many neighbours
Abbey Hey and near Chapman St other side of Peter Pan park. My childhood stomping ground.

Mostly a great area apart from the dicks that are everywhere these days.

Always wanted one of the houses near Debdale park. (Abbey Hey side near the old debdale park allotments as couldn't afford Hyde Road side near Farley Road)

It was a Labour heartland with Gerald Kaufman and Kenneth Marks back then.

Been Labour since 1935.

I live just off Chapman Street and Peter Pan Park is literally about 100 yards away. Lived here since 2004 and it's fine in the main

I lived on Meadfoot Road. Them flats, high rise and low rise, had some dicks in them.

Mind you we are a different generation. I was there from 1967 to 1977

They are being very restrained, Zak is a conman, pure and simple - why do you think he didn't stand as the Green candidate in his home town?
Well, that has already been explained with their policy on candidates. As he’s been living in London for 20 years he will be trying to win a seat down there.

They’ve done nothing but attack the Greens and have shown no restraint. They depicted Polanski as Svangali. Now i can’t say that is something i’d lose much sleep over but shows they’re just attacking him without coming up with much in terms of what they’d do for the area themselves. Then you think about what they’re implying and realise what the fallout from the right wing press would have been had Corbyn’s Labour done the same about a Jewish person. Also how bent pricks like Mandleson and McSweeney would have ran with it as racist to get their yes man Starmer in. It’s another clear show of how bent the system is.

Then you’ve got the gobshite himself Starmer going on that Polanski just wants everyone on heroin. Not only is it a pathetic and childish smear. He contradicted himself twice by saying all kids in playgrounds would be on drugs and then said his 17 year old son would be able to be able to buy it in 6 months. He obviously thinks the current drugs sellers have a strict policy on who they sell to. Finally he said areas like Gorton would then be full of drugs. As opposed to how it is currently hey Keith. You really couldn’t make the bullshit he spouts up.

Under Polanski the Greens in Denton/Gorton have put their important core environmental agenda aside and used profoundly divisive issues like drugs and Gaza as their flagship policies. This deliberately polarising tactic is from the same populist playbook as Farage, exploiting a complex problem in order to target a specific group of voters but without any genuinely new plans to provide a solution.

So no response to the points i’ve made about Labour attacking Polanski then?

I think the Greens main point was talking about inequality in the areas. If them saying to asians we’re not racist and we’re against genocide is a bad thing then i’m baffled as to why!

Regarding them talking about drugs this isn’t something they’ve just come up with.In this instance i don’t see how it would even help them. Reason being most your Green original voters are probably on board with it. You say about decriminalising drugs to the average bloke in the street and they look at you like o you’ve got 2 heads. That’s the reaction it’s getting largely in the press and from most your reform voters. As you need a proper adult debate about such a complexed issue. Instead it just gets sensationalised by the media and our gutless PM.

Not aware of anything out of order that Starmer or indeed Labour has said about Zack, please supply quotes. The Greens are however quite openly urging the Muslim voters to punish Labour because it supported Israel against Hamas and despite their recognition of the Palestine state. Their recreational drug legalization message is profoundly divisive and nowhere near having wide support in the country at large despite its popularity with the young voters in the constituency.

I hate to break it to you, but legalisation will completely fuck the dealers up. It's one of the main arguments for legalisation.

What's the norm for announcing the result for this Constituency?

I know it's now a new one but, how soon was 'not so gorgeous' George's result announced?

Wondering if I should plan my night for a late one or pick it up on the 06.00 news.
Was wondering the same myself. Do i get some cans in tomorrow or not?

Well, I think you can vote upto 10pm so would have thought results would be well after midnight, but you'd get some kind of idea with exit polls beforehand.

I see the reform voters and Labour stalwarts on here are pushing the narrative that only Labour can beat Reform.
