Denton and Gorton by-election - Green Party wins

I'm pretty much sick to death of "politics" in this country.
And I'm sick to death of politicians appearing to chase votes and looking to get into some kind of power rather than leading with vision and ideas.
The whole shitshow is because nobody wants to actually be honest and admit they don't have all the answers but can agree on at least some of the questions.

Tongue in cheek (a bit) but Lord Blunkett on Any Questions said he probably gave Hannah's speech when he became an MP in 1981... and pointed out that as a plumber she'd need a new job as there won't be boilers to fit.

This is a report from Joseph Rowntree Trust. It talks about the General Election and their findings then.
I expect during the GE they couldn’t cover as many polling stations as they could yesterday.

I vaguely remember reading about them after the GE.
The 'non-white passing' bit is a weird detail. If you think about it for a second, of course most of the people who are turned away will be from overseas. There will be people who are eligible to vote in local elections who turn up on the day of the general election assuming they can vote in that too.

The government suspended military support for Israel during the war and Starmer publicly backed a Palestinian state. We’re constantly being told, quite rightly, our involvement in middle eastern wars is a disaster and we should stay out of it. I’m an advocate of freedom of speech so don’t agree with the treatment of Palestine Action but I do wonder why that conflict, over everything else, is Labour’s fault.
So you would expect people to forgot everything up to this point because Starmer supposedly suspended military action and mentioned palenstinian state, haha come on fella don't be daft. The way he's handled it has rightfully seen him take a kick in the bollocks.
If you or Starmer dont realise this then that shows an alarming lack of political nous. Do the Muslim community feel Labour have their backs? No. So they didnt vote for them, its that simple.

Yes, other constituencies, they’re the equivalent of the greens in this one. The next election is going to be a lot of people wanting to both keep reform out and also not vote for the two main parties if they don’t have to. The greens and the Lib Dem’s are going to be the main winners in that depending on the constituency, or at least think now they are.

Got a feeling by the time the GE comes round though, a lot might go to Labour from the both of them.
Sorry I was talking about the result of this election only, yeah it will be interesting to see what happens in other types of seats now.

Apparently she does exist! She’s allegedly a member of a Gorton FB group that I’m on. A few were talking about it on there the other week.

Her son was hugely pissed off with Reform as she never authorised that letter to go out but by sending it out it led to her getting pelters from all over to the point that she had to come off social media. Despite being harangued so much, Reform weren’t arsed that they’d thrown her under a bus as they never bothered to apologise to her.

This. Parties and politicians are seemingly happy to cosy up to voters and tell them any old shit just to to get the vote and get in power.

I sincerely hope that Reform's conduct since their loss acts as a catalyst to a collapse in their national support. Trumpian sore-loser protestations are embarrassing.

Do you think the Labour Party wants the war in Gaza?

Nobody trying to get into government does ffs.

The point is The Greens used Gaza as a way to get Muslims to vote for them over Labour. It was a shameful tactic and divisive and at odds with “hope not hate”, an organisation that has a lot of hate ironically.
Seriously, what the actual fuck? Apart from the fact that The Green Party stance on Gaza is a long-standing one, are people seriously suggesting that they’ve no right to try to persuade Muslims to vote for them and only Labour are allowed to do that?

I’m finding it utterly hilarious seeing both Reform and Labour skriking that the Greens dared to attract the Muslim vote. Fact is that the Greens ran a fantastic campaign and had the balls to turn up in all areas of the constituency and engage with every demographic. Unlike Reform who concentrated too much on one area and one demographic where they knew they’d be popular anyway. What’s the fucking point of that? As for Labour cry-arsing about the Greens taking votes off people who would normally vote Labour, get in the bin FFS!

Have you read what I’ve actually said in this thread?

I even said they’re entitled to go after whatever votes they wish. I’ve just said I don’t approve of the messaging, which again, I’m entitled to think and I’m not the only one.

Have their backs, about what? It’s a fucking foreign conflict thousands of miles away.

Given our track record in the Middle East, we should be nowhere near it.

You said it was a shameful tactic. What tactics do you think they should’ve used to get the Muslim vote?
