Will we win the league this season? No

Arsenal are getting panicky in games (see Wolves). Against Chelsea, they were saved by Neto's sending off. Unfortunately, loss of nerve does not affect their set-piece play.
Quite. Sometimes I wonder if we are looking for signs so notice them more. Their performance levels statistically haven’t dropped at all, which you can usually see from a sustained drop in form. I hope you are right.

Those corners are a cheat code. Either the refs have to stop them or we simply have to copy them.

Anyone who watches the matches can see they are all over the place at the moment. Nerves are certainly kicking in and it’s only going to get worse for them.

They look tired. Their defence which looked rock solid earlier in the season now looks vulnerable. They have an attack full of very average players.

I don’t think Arsenal are bottling it despite all the media going berserk every time they drop a point.

It’s clear now that it’s a two horse race and both teams believe they can win it. Any points dropped by either side are unlikely to be because they have lost their bottle but more a team has underperformed or been unlucky for that particular game.

Both teams will drop points at some stage. If it’s a draw at our place that’s true immediately!

The Arsenal collapse hasn't happened yet and may not. Neither has ours.

Right now I have Arsenal still winning by around 5 points but a while ago I thought it would be nearer 10 so what do I know! A lot can and will happen so enjoy the ride and keep everything crossed because, if we do it, the meltdown from Arsenal will be unprecedented.
They have had chances over the last month to extend their lead and kill off any hope we have had of even competing for this seasons title.

That in itself is a bottle. They shouldn’t even be in a race

It was genuinely incredible today. Every Chelsea player either bear hugged or rugby tackled to the floor at every corner, offensive or defensive. How they’re allowed to get away with it, without censure, is beyond belief. Regardless of its impact on their title rivals, what they’re doing is making a complete mockery of the game. The world’s prime footballing competition reduced to a wrestling match.
Incomprehensible it is being allowed but it is. Yet outside of corners players drop to the floor with a gentle blow of the wind and it’s a foul. We may need to wear paper shirts at the etihad!!

Set piece routines are not sensitive to nerves though.

I feel that it is too late this season for the refs and authorities to clamp down on the holding and blocking at corners but it is becoming a topic of discussion and I can see a ref clampdown next season. It's anti-football and bad for the Premier League.

True but the other thing that hasn’t been pointed out is that as good as arsenal are at attacking set pieces they are pretty awful at defending them.

If PGMOL were serious about their role and responsibilities they could and should have addressed the issues which arsenal have caused already.

The tactics which Arteta has introduced into their play has been getting more cynical and anti-football as the seasons have progressed, and Arteta becomes more desperate to win by whatever means.

PGMOL have facilitated his tactics to the detriment of other teams.

Looking at Brighton. Shit on the road this season but strong at home.

P14 W6 D6 L2.

If the crowd are up for it, they can make it very nervy for Arsenal.

Well said Leroy Rosenior (from BBC Football when Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior was asked about Arne Slot's comments regarding the number of set-piece goals):

"I think that is the beauty of football, you can do it in so many different ways. There's no right or wrong way to play football for me. I'm sure when we scored from a corner yesterday, our fans didn't care what the goal looked like. I'm sure Arsenal's fans didn't care what their goals looked like either. The game is about winning.

"What I would say about corners is that there needs to be a review at the end of the season in terms of the way teams are affecting the goalkeepers and are holding on during defensive set plays. I think that's something that gives an unfair advantage to certain teams."

Lots of people are really getting their goat up about Arsenal's reliance on set-pieces but that's exactly what's stopping them from walking away with the league. Arteta's playing incredibly conservative football, giving up a lot of possession and control, and not getting anywhere near the best out of his squad as a result of his set-piece obsession.

Because City are in the title race this season it has distorted expectations of what we should be capable of in terms of points achieved. We're good enough to get about 75-80 points this season, maybe a smidge more than that if we go on a really strong run until the end of the season. Normally that would be nowhere near a title-winning amount.

We got 78 points in 2013, 79 points in 2015, 78 points in 2017, and 81 points in 2020. We were nowhere near winning the league in any of those seasons. United, Chelsea, Chelsea again, and Liverpool all walked away with their titles in those years. Arsenal have been building this squad for five years and they should be walking away with this one too.

Their squad has lots of quality and depth. Raya one of the best keepers in the league, a strong back four, a tall and technical midfield, lots of diversity up front in terms of player profile, the man who scored the winning goal in last season's FA Cup final to come off the bench. Meanwhile we're in the first year of an absolutely huge rebuild.

But here we are, neck and neck. And it's because they won't take the handbrake off. It's all well and good when the set-pieces work, but there have been many, many games this season in which the set-pieces haven't come off and Arsenal have had no idea how to close the game down. It nearly cost them against 10 men on Sunday.

It's a bit like us when Haaland isn't playing well. If we can supply him and he buries a chance, great. If defenders just mark him out of the game we have no answer. It's the same with Arsenal - so many points dropped this season in games when the corners didn't come off as they wanted and got pulled back into a title race with a weaker City.

0-0 against that Liverpool team. 0-0 at Forest. Losing at home to United. Getting battered by Brentford. Dropping points to one of the worst teams in the league after being 2-0 up. Nearly chucking it away in a home match against 10 men. This team has been built over the course of five years to be perfect but this is the best they've got?

Four wins in their last nine league games. What gives people the idea that they're going to suddenly win all of their last nine games in a row, scoring from corners in every single one of them? They should have strolled away with this league and they should already be planning the parade - instead they're getting cagier and cagier and cagier.

Let them carry on thinking that set-pieces are the key to winning the title. As it has done already this season, it will cost them enough points for us to take them over if we play as well as we can. Their home crowd are nervy and fractious. The atmosphere will get toxic at the Emirates if they don't score early in these final few home games.

City rebuilding and recovering from legends leaving, Liverpool a dumpster fire until Christmas, Aston Villa streaky as fuck. This was Arsenal's year to effectively seal the title in March and then go for the treble. They have squandered it. Their 22-23 squad would be miles clear of the pack right now. Instead they risk dropping to 2nd.

People think Arsenal are only leading the league because of their set-piece goals. I don't agree. They're only top because a City team recovering from a massively underwhelming season, and still figuring out a new system, spent the whole of January without a fit senior CB in the squad. They kept leaving us alive - they will pay for it.

I think it has, it's just that the collapse has put us in the race rather than handing it to us. But I agree, I don't think we are getting much more than what we have got. Just can't blink first.

Long way to go still and with both teams in all competitions injuries could play their part. If Gabriel for example got an injury, that's a major set piece threat out and how else can they score? It's also their best defender out.

I still think we're miles off it when it comes to how we play when we bring certain players into the side which means we're vulnerable if we lose certain players to injury.

Just got to take it a game at a time and see where we end up. There's still 5-6 games left when we play them and that's when the pressure is truly on.
