10 | Rayan Cherki - 2025/26

We buy ONE good player. And Pep's ego bench him all the time. Great player Cherki
I think that Rabona has scared Pep that he might get compared to his other love child Messi. In the same way he took Haaland off at 5 goals with loads of time to play matching Messi's 5 goals in one CL game. Can't have somebody beating Messi's record.

This week he gave an interview to the French channel L'Equipe, when asked who the coach's favorite is, he answered without hesitation Bernardo, he has only been there for a few months and he has already understood how things work... he just has to wait unfortunately for him!

It shouldn't be one or the other though. There's a way to play both and both are in our best XI.

Honestly, I understand Pep benching him (and to a degree Foden and Reijnders) in big games due to the physicality and because Cherki didnt look great earlier on in the big games.

But he needs to get over it, he and Doku are our best creators and we need them both on as much as fucking possible to win the fucking game.

Play Nico G or other defensive midfielders to balance it out.
I don't want to sound jaded, but i think he is a bit overrated here

I actually agree with Pep that he shouldn't be a starter in big games. Plays his own game too much for my taste. Great when you are chasing and need a magical moment.

But for the regular grind, I see why he isn't starting. His urgency is like that of a Central defender

as good as he is I can also see why Pep doesnt play him at times.....

He has this desire to always try something when its actually better to just keep it simple....

I know we were chasing a goal so maybe its a little harsh on him but he tried the same flick pass twice in quick succession on the edge fo their box tonight and he gave it away both times.

I love his flair and creativity BUT like pep said about Messi, he was the best cause he had the techincal skill but he used it only when he had to -not just because he had the ability to....Cherki needs to learn this.

God forbid a player doing some creative when 3-0 down. We don’t deserve a player like Cherki if that’s what Pep thinks about him. He’s one of the most gifted players in the world, just let him do his thing ffs.

Bernardo is absolutely useless alongside Rodri, I said it a few months ago. He can no longer play in the midfield of Europe's top teams. He doesn't fit into the midfield of Bayern Munich, PSG, Arsenal, Barcelona, or even Chelsea and Real Madrid. Alongside Rodri, we need a true number 8 capable of finding vertical passes that break lines and, defensively, able to win the ball back from opposing players, quick and mobile enough to be present in rapid transitions, able to slice through our midfield like butter.

Unfortunately, Bernardo runs everywhere but without any real impact. Athletically, he's no match for today's modern football. It's no wonder we struggle no matter which four defenders we field. Our defense wasn't protected at all with Rodri and Bernardo, as we saw tonight and against Nottingham Forest. Opposing midfielders have a field day when we lose possession.

Therefore, it's impossible to play Rodri, Bernardo, and Cherki together; we'll be even more vulnerable.

Makes even less sense to play Rodri Bernardo and Semenyo.

Rodri, Nico (either) and Cherki would be better. Or Rodri Nico Nico - size and physicality of that midfield with Cherki narrow off the right.

Have you not been watching the past month with our midfield of Rodri, O'Reilly and Bernardo? It's the most solid our midfield has been in 2 years. We can certainly play Bernardo and Cherki in the same team with Cherki as an inside right 10 with Nunes providing the width on that side. We did the same thing with Doku on the left to good effect earlier in the season and Cherki would be much better at it.

Yes, with one of the two Nicos (O'Reilly or Gonzalez), but Bernardo alone with Rodri, it didn't work and it won't work.

I agree and I wasn’t originally implying we can play Rodri, Bernardo and Cherki as a midfield three to begin with.

Did Pep seriously think he was going to transform Cherki into some kind of scurrying machine like Bernardo ?

It's doing it at the right moment though....It's nit about being 3-0 down...its about going it when giving it away is going to lead to a huge problem

He has to start both him and Marmoush against West Ham. It’s not acceptable if he doesn’t.

Bench Haaland.

I wouldn't bench Haaland.

He needs to get back scoring and Cherki can actually make us create chances.

Marmoush has a goal rate for us of about 1 in every 4 appearances. Not great.

What we need is to get ticking with players on who know how to create goals playing alongside players who can score goals. Yet we seem to leave creative players on the bench and leaving a striker with no service.

Aye well the fact we were 3-0 down and unable to create chances all game is down to the fact the likes of Cherki are not favoured above players who are not creative.

So if Pep or anyone is pointing the finger at him for a risky bit of play while trying to dig us out of a hole, then they're a shithouse because they should be pointing the finger at who put us in that hole.

I think people are so used to seeing dross in football matches that they’ve forgotten how good football is supposed to be played. God forbid Cherki tries something as a creative player because we’d get countered but yes let’s give Semenyo the chance to chase his first touch in a 10 role he’s never played. It’s a contradiction, Pep simply wanted to prove he’s still got it and failed.

Players aren’t supposed to get to the 18 yard box and stop playing football. At that point the ball is meant to go forwards. Who better for that than Cherki?

If we‘re going to persist with the wide attacking fullbacks (and it feels like we‘ve boxed ourselves in on that, unfortunately), then this surely has to be the way to go for the rest of the season. Nunes right back, Ait Nouri left back, Bernardo, Rodri and O‘Reilly in midfield. Narrow front three of Cherki right, Haaland in the middle, Semenyo/Marmoush/Doku left. With Foden available as an alternative for Cherki.

Couldn’t agree more.

Football used to be entertaining. Cherki entertains me as a fan. And not only is he entertaining he’s effective!

As I said, I love his flair and creativity, but it's about timing and necessity at times
