Hugo Viana | Director of Football

Reijnders
Marmoush
Semenyo

these are all mid table players at best...none top their game (please dont say Reijnders was Seria A player of the year....fucking Scott Mctomminay was one of the best players in that league....it is no comaprrison)

Thank god your not involved in football at this level if you think they are mid-table at best haha

well said, 2nd and still in with a chance to win the league

Cup final to come

Another QF in another cup

Plenty of positives! I actually had a Spurs mate of mine text me today to blame City for what's going on at the top and bottom of the PL.

Cheeky prick! Ha
He's lucky we gave them 4 points!

I still think there's mileage in the Maresca rumours. He was my own choice to come back after a spell at Leicester, but Pep stayed on and he went to Chelsea.

Looking at the Chelsea restructure, I can't help but think that Viana has been taking a similar approach to the future here, perhaps with Maresca very much in mind.

Maresca was bombed at Stamford Bridge because of links with City (after which they did a job of trying to discredit him via the media).

No smoke without fire. As far as I'm aware, Maresca was (probably still is) very highly regarded by the City hierarchy.

We were having this same discussion yesterday, and the consensus of others seemed to be the same. Not sure if he’s the right fit, but you can argue the same for any other manager that comes in.

overall feels like he is building squad for high intensity play style that is nowhere to be seen.
Leijnders was told to be the brain in the high intense dipper side around 2019-2022, which was all about high pressing aka inhaler style, two attacking fullbacks with regular and decent crossing, huge G+A across the front three, Mane and Salah from wide and Firmino middle, and a rather boring but sick high workrate midfield likes of Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Milner etc.

thing is something like that style would benefit many players in the squad, but for whatever reason Pep is going with the low intensity, slow build up, high line which keeps getting found out more and more and players look bad in it new ones especially while form of older ones like Haaland, Foden, Dias are poor.

Marmoush is puzzling transfer, he was a beast for Frankfurt o the counterattack, they set up deep to get the best out of Marmoush, Ekitike duo, they were so good running behind, attack space, for him to wait 10 mins of slow sideways passing get the ball up to him is pointles especiall ith his back to the net or front of low block. such a style mismatch. its like you crave a red Porsche as you are single want a speedy car to impress women and gold diggers and get a combi Volkswagen minibus instead.

Doku, Marmoush, Semenyo all need space front of them, our style rarely allows this.we are so slow in build up that even if opponent doesnt plan low block they naturally do it especially seeing how vulnerable we are to counters.

we had serious intensity under Pep in 2018-2023. we had off the ball workrate at sick levels. we won title without a striker as others put in sick pressing like Jesus, Sterling and everbody chipped in with goals.
these days we need to praise Doku if the ends the season with 2+4 GA in the league as our best winger.
Salah had one or two matches last season when he did 2+4 in a single fucking game not over a season. and then dont get me started on what Bobb, Savinho served up as winger here this season.

these tactics literally limiting in what players strengths are and does put the focus on their weaknesses.
watch Semenyo complete subbmarine drop next season on G+A if tactics dont change. now he still had bit of momentum he brought from Borunemouth and kept scoring, but that will be gone after the summer. same as Marmoush added a few after Frankfurt but once gets the Pep "way" he is not recognizable to his Frankfurt numbers.
Good post.

Hugo and Pep:

My question tho is if pep didn’t want to change how we play why agree with the club to purchase a different skill set player?

It’s self sabotage at its best. Typical city.

If this is exactly what’s happening then he’s doing his job. He needs to prepare for post Pep. Which manager fits that profile, I don’t know, Enrique seems to be more direct in his teams play than Pep?
If we’re going to go direct / blistering counters the best man for the job is Klopp imo mate.

Teams lower in the league than us seem to have a better tactical plan than us and are more entertaining to watch……

I've thought for a while (from a neutral perspective) that 'lesser' teams like Brighton and Bournemouth have often been easier to watch, this season and last, than City.

Similar could be said about Palace and (in recent months) Leeds, both of who have adopted a higher risk style of play on occasion this season.

Hurzler and Iraola in particular are strong prospects for much bigger clubs in the future, but almost certainly not at City.

Pep's risk averse approach to games has produced trophies galore, he's not going to change. With great players at their peak, it's wonderful to watch... The last semblance of real greatness at City left the building when KDB joined Napoli, and when Rodri suffered serious injury. It's all been downhill in entertainment terms since then.

Very very questionable signings - him and Pep are not on the same wave length

Semenyo - Bournmouth was his level...low technical ability and where does he fit in....he doesnt replace Haaland thats for certain and cant play any other position...
Reijnders - awful - said it before but possibly one of the worst players in the last 5 years besides Phillips
Marmoush - Doesnt fit.
Khus - he is ok but a long way to go
Guehi - starter at the moment but is he good enough to step up....a poor Real Madrid team says no
Perhaps these level b+ players were signed in the hope, or expectation, that the GOAT coach would raise them to a squad capable of winning trophies?
Perhaps this was a test too far of Pep. Is there any sign of progress thus far?

FFS, give Senenyo and Guehi a chance. They have just signed for City.
Guehi -yes - but he struggled big time against quality opposition that is not questionable...the good thing is that he looks like he will learn fast

But Semenyo already looks like he doesnt fit in...can he adapt and play wide of the central striker cause playing him inside or as a number 10 fucks up our attack....He needs to raise his game beyond scoring goals.....

Well,I’d settle for scoring goals right now. And also for Pep to realize he doesn’t need to start every game

Don't we just love Bluemoon after a game we don't get 3 points, or spank a team 4/5-0!
Expect more from 500 mil spent though to be fair. I look at the squad and don’t have a clue where it’s gone. United have improved more in that time and they are always used as an example of what not to do.

Been saying this since last season. We are playing pep style football with viana style players. Not much has changed since last season and something's gotta give...

All the signings were made under JG - first season of a pure pep team, and first time pep has managed a team that didn't include other manager's signings in his career.
