This is spot on. The first two years post pep is going to be constant noise and comparisons to his era. It’s best for someone to come in who’s work with Pep and the players to give us some sense of continuity. Also gives Vinny a couple more seasons experience at a top club. Vinny should be our absolute number 1 pick after Maresca. I haven’t seen many credible journalists also dismiss the Maresca noise and it’s been floating around for a while now…Uninspiring is sensible to me if I’m honest.
IMO the manager after Pep should be a ‘Pellegrini’ character. A safe pair of hands for a couple of seasons to serve as a transition between one big manager and another.
We all want to see Vinny manage City at some point but I don’t think it should be immediately after Pep.
I’m up for Maresca for a couple of seasons then see what’s happening with Vinny, maybe Gundo part of the back room staff too.
When Pep leaves it’ll be such a shock to the system there’s a high risk it all goes a bit ‘Moyes’, and we don’t want to risk burning a top target manager that way.

This absolutely smacks of the club knowing that whoever follows Pep is on a hiding to nothing. Hopefully that's the plan and the 'actual' successor has given us his timeline.
What I will say is that I think we need a shift in the way we have been playing,. Maybe having a yes man come in after Pep and trying to keep the ball rolling in the same direction might not be the best move.

I wonder if the size of the name, a world recognised figure, would come into it. I think some of our tourist friends are Pep fans first, Erl second and City third.
From the business point of view, we still need to be sellable in the far east and USA. I don't think Maresca does that.
That said, I don't give a monkeys who it is. We could forward plan and give big Sam the full season to save us from relegation, rather than from Xmas, or for when the verdict comes.

Vinny isn’t going anywhere and most likely will only get one shot at the job. It would be a mistake taking him too early.

We’re not a great team anymore but we’ve got a very decent squad. Players like Khusanov, Josko, Cherki and Doku are all a good age to improve. I can’t see how we’d miss out on top 5 with the state of this league. Look at utd, decent transfer window last summer and a half competent manager for a couple of months and they’re 3rd. We’re still 2nd after a string of very average signings. Couple of good ones and we’d have a great chance of winning the league again.

IF Maresca does end up becoming our new manager I'd obviously love him to prove the doubters wrong.
I just don't rate him at all.
Just watching a few vids of Maresca and how Chelsea played he's so similar to Pep. Inverted fullbacks , overlords in midfield only difference is he likes to rely on the special players that can change a game to have the most space possible. At Chelsea that was Palmer, Enzo and Estevao

I think he'd absolutely jump at the chance and I'd be astonished if he's not being seriously considered by the board. The issue for me is whether the end of his Bayern contract coincides with Pep leaving. If it doesn't and Pep leaves before then, we'd possibly be looking at a Pellegrini type situation where we get a manager in who's happy to do 2 or 3 years before Vinny takes the reigns. Now I can't see the likes of Alonso or Enrique agreeing to that but I can certainly see Maresca agreeing to it as his stock isn't as high.

Yeah the difficulty may be in getting him away from Paris at all, but maybe he'll fancy a new challenge. He's done enough in Europe with this PSG team to impress, though he may find it a lot more difficult league-wise over here just due to the amount of decent teams. He's certainly better than a stopgap though!

I completely understand why we would look for a Pellegrini type character to replace Pep but for me that’s someone experienced and their own ideas. Maresca doesn’t have enough experience and as such seems like a huge risk. He’s likely to be seen as a Pep apprentice. He failed at Parma, did well enough with Leicester and was doing ok at Chelsea but forced his way out. I can’t see how he’s the right fit for us.

Took over as manager at Como after they got promoted to Serie A, finished 10th last season, currently 4th this season.
They play attacking possession football and Fabregas as a name probably carries more respect than Maresca.
It may be a little soon for him, but he's doing well and on the way up. Kompany got the Bayern job based on less results-wise - but Bayern recognised the style would be a fit for them. Maybe Fabregas would be a good fit for us, I don't know. I expect he will go to a different big club in a year or so though and do pretty well.

1) So having a statue makes it a non-starter?
2) Spent many years in Germany? He played for Hamburg for a grand total of 2 years before joining us
3) He might not follow Pep but why wouldn't he come back one day to the club that he has a particular fondness for?
