Energy policy and the lies in the media ?

On how to avoid gas setting the price of leccy... ...build more renewables.

Spain is there already.

Ye but Spain has that big orange ball in the sky most of the year, if we could harness rain we’d be fucking flying, wind and wave would be the way to go over here but you’ve got all those twats harping on about it spoiling their view of a hill, well fucking freeze to death in winter whilst looking at that hill you dicks.

I don’t know the answers but this conflict has proven once again that our infrastructure security is behest to international markets and incidents.

Successive governments have done too little. We have ridiculously expensive bills compared to the rest of the world and now we’re looking at rationing.

We’ve been ran by cunts for many decades.

Agree a county like us should be self sufficient on energy! Getting rid of our nuclear energy power stations or updating building more 20 years ago was the governments sleeping into where we are now! Thinking we can import gas from Europe is fine for ever more! Well at least now we have woken up and starting build Nuclear power stations..

We're not even run by our own home grown cunts anymore, we're run by foreign cunts thanks to the great utility sell off.

So given the Iran conflict right now and the impact on oil prices. We are having a lot of phone in shows media discussion etc etc about energy policy, cost of living, energy prices, net zero, green energy etc.

However what’s the truth ?

I keep hearing that green energy is more expensive. Yet isn’t it cheaper ?

I am also hearing people say that we can get more out of the North Sea yet surely that will take ages.

I am also hearing that green energy is subsides but haven’t they fallen as the costs have fallen and we have had austerity. Also doesn’t oil field decommissioning get massive tax deductions.

I don’t think there is a topic that I trust the experts / commentators less. I am fairly sure they all work for oil funded think tanks.

I cannot see what the government had to gain from getting things so wrong according to the opposite side.
Green energy costs paid to generators are set by current market price of gas, gas cost plus x%, a price agreed for the next 30 years.
From Sky news yesterday if decision was taken today to drill in North Sea oil could be flowing by August.
True it would be sold at market rates ( assuming current licence agreements used) but the tax on sales, income tax from employees, licence fees to extract and spending in Scotland to build the rigs would be able to subsidise costs to UK households.

Spain has better solar, but about an equal share from wind too.

We have one of the best wind opportunities in the world (and already amongst the highest generation from wind in the world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_by_country), so every bit as big an opportunity as Spain. They just moved a bit sooner.

Tidal (rather than wave) is also a really big, but very expensive, opportunity for us.

Why not drill for oil it’s not just for fuel it’s for manufacturing we will never get away from that side so it’s not just about burning oil it’s about that use

We're hopefully not all that far away from renewables setting the price in most instances.

Not entirely true. Over the last 25 years we have reduced energy consumption per capita by 30% and the energy intensity of the economy by 50% and renewables account for around 50% of UK power generation. Govts of all political persuasion have by and large followed the same policies to transform our energy profile away from fossil fuels and taken measures to increase energy efficiency. We are less exposed to these energy shocks because of Govt action over the years, but we are not immune. No country is immune.

We do have high bills though, although some of it was due to increased investment in renewables.

Above figures from IEA.

No way could oil be on the market by August. Would be years get permission explore develop build oil rig ship put in place set up then drill and transport the oil

Yep. The road to ruin is paved by good intentions (but those paving stones are not being layed by the brightest tool in the shed).

1) It's finite
2) We don't actually have much more of it
3) It's frying the planet
4) It ties us in to dependence on it, making us more vulnerable, not less, to circumstances like today
5) It'll take years to even have a small effect

One of the things that isn’t factored into the discussion with renewables is the need for energy storage. The cost of renewables at the minute does not include the storage….the storage is in effect the fossil fuels used in dispatch-able plants.

Remove those fossil fuels, you’d have to have a shit load more renewable and add on the storage costs to store it because it’s intermittent.

Spain just announced it is reducing the vat equivalent on petrol from 21 percent to 10 percent.
Decision taken so should happen at the pumps within a day or so.

Anyone heard of successful gravity batteries being used for storing excess power for when it’s needed?

Looks like the company that made the test one in Scotland went under last year.

This sort of thing pisses me off good style. John Logie Baird invented the Television but you cannot buy a British television. Same thing with the 'Green Revolution', try buying British solar panels, inverters, batteries, heat pumps. Wind turbines are everywhere now, check out where they are made. What about electric cars?
