I have thought about this topic a great deal

I'm of the opinion that Nunes has developed into a top talent at his position in world football.

Not saying transfermarket is some sort of Bible to follow but as a general aggregate source it's not perfect but Nunes is current the 6th highest valued RB in the world.

He's been indispensable to the XI this year

He has the chops to play both internally and externally

He's got a nice cross on him

He all the physical attributes you could want. Pace, strength, etc

He's in his absolute prime

The 5 guys ahead of him on that list (hakimi, kounde, timber, Trent, reese) are not really movable. There isn't incentive to pay that money unless Nunes left.

So for an RB, if Nunes has a deserved stranglehold on that sort of role, and he's really ONLY playing that role (we don't flex him into some CM minutes or wing minutes at all)

Then the target must be either A) a younger, developing talent who could overtake Nunes minutes wise with time.

Or b)

A player who can PLAY RB enough to not be a liability but maybe not a true RB

Think about rico lewis, what is his archetype as a player

Hes also played multiple positions (cm, am, dm, RB) but physicality wise he is just getting kinda bullied in the modern game

We don't need someone to immediately usurp Nunes playing time, but rather someone who can spell him and contribute elsewhere

I don't think we need a right back, but we need someone who can play a bit of right back

Those come in two forms

6s/8s who can play RB (think the modern ideal of say Kimmich)

Or CBs who can flex out wide because they have solid ability on the ball/tremendous stamina and physicality

Then they need to be right footed

So to name a few names

The first I would name is warren zaire emery. He's been fantastic and steady for PSG for a number of months now. There's no sense of realism here on this one, as he reportedly loves PSG and does not want to leave at all. But he could flex between various midfield roles comfortably as well as play a very strong (if not adventurous) right back. His sense of balance and gravity and physicality for a player his age is incredible. He'd be a singing primarily for the midfield but could flex to RB

Other name of interest: Archie Gray. To be fair I have not watched him as much but I know he's been used out there as well as other positions like CB/CDM. He could be a useful flexible player but would also have to agree to be a flexible squad player where he probably sees himself as better. Homegrown

I don't think kayode is good enough on the ball for our purposes. Also he's really just an RB without positional flexibility

Livramento seems cost prohibitive and not worth it tbh

Givario reed has been a shout. I don't watch dutch football at all but he also seems like too pure an RB

James Garner could be an interesting shout. Checks some boxes that I've been describing. Doesn't play RB now but he can really whip the ball in.

Acheampong from Chelsea is another interesting shout for a squad buy but he's likely not ready to contribute at this level. If he can't break through there why would we expect him to here?

Hinshelwood at brighton is another sort of interesting name to me but also not likely ready for the step up

When it comes to portugal/spain/Belgium/lots of those other places I don't watch enough to know about the big up and coming youngsters

There's a couple kids from porto, genk, brugge, clubs like that but I'm not going to pretend to have watched them

If you made it this far, thanks for reading!
I don't have the solution. Nobody does quite yet! That's why this thread is 159 pages.

Like think about LB. We have one who can play outside as a specialist (RAN). When he plays he holds width

One who plays inverted generally/can flex into midfield (Nico)

And Gvardiol who can do whatever he wants and also maybe be our top cb when healthy

We have full coverage for every tactical situation that can exist because all the archetypes are filled

If nunes is our width holding rb specialist

We need someone who plays more internally

With Khusanov being maybe the pure defensive play over there

I think we go after a 6/8 who can flex out there and is open to it

Livramento is still only 23 can see why the club might see him as a long term solution, if he can get over his injury issues you've got a good player there
I’d still take the gamble on him if the price is right. Like many have said Nunes is our first choice and rightly so but having someone come in and rotate is great.

Livramento can also cover LB so NOR can play in midfield.

Ok he’s injury record is a concern. Personally I don’t think it’s as bad as some make out and he wouldn’t be expected to come in and play every minute here.

Also we don’t know how happy Nunes is at playing RB, when he first started playing there I feel like there was a bit of noise about him being unhappy but seems to have stopped.

I think Livramento would be a great signing for the next 5/6/7 years in mind.

We have Ait-Nouri and Gvardiol who can also play left back. Also the vibe that Livramento wouldn’t play every game? If he was already here, would the narrative be that he wants to leave precisely for that reason? Like Trafford?

Archie Grey or Lewis Miley would fit the role well. Homegrown, versatile midfielders who can be molded to Nunes like RB.

Oh Christ not this again. You have to admit GK is completely different, Pep openly says it’s a “special position”.

I’d love Trafford to stay, I’ve just always been under the assumption he’ll go because he’ll want to play first team football every week and I hope, if the case, they let him if an appropriate fee is offered. He’s too good to be sat on a bench - but if he’s on anyone’s bench I want him on ours. Kid has got some serious talent, but so does Donna.

Let me preface by saying I'm a big Donnarumma fan, but I have a sneaky suspicion that if only one of Donnarumma or Trafford is here next year it will be young James...JMO

I think we sign Josh Acheampong from Chelsea. Chelsea are giving him zero minutes, he’s highly rated prospect 19 years old I think he’d accept the role of being competition to Nunes. He’s homegrown, less injury issues than Livramento. He wouldn’t cost a lot of money.

We’ve liked him before he just fits perfectly for the role we are looking for

We definitely looked into him before, could see it happening.

Looks like Marco Palestra being lined up by Newcastle as Livramento replacement.
I think this lad is going to be extremely good.
Has had an excellent season on loan at Cagliari. He has pace to burn good physicality and likes a tackle. He’s just what we need and would rather spend £35m on him than £70m on Livramento who’s injury prone.

Maybe a loan deal for Trafford

Have you watched him?

Yes
Bit of a masochist I guess but I follow Italian football closely. Very unusual player for an Italian defender.
He’s versatile and can switch to the left side too.
Very attacking full back. A few question marks defensively as he likes to get forward a bit too much sometimes but that could be coached out of him.
Has plenty of pace which gets him out of trouble.
He’s will definitely end up at a big club one day.

yea, that will be him vs Kayode for the RB spot in Italy squad with Politano dropped
