The Labour Government

Conservative eugenics ?

Can't remember all the details but they had to sack one of their policy guys for pointing out the exciting opportunities there were to screen out the less intelligent and so have a population that placed less strain on the state. Dominic Cummings, though too smart to couch it in terms that would get him directly into deep trouble, had an interest too - more positioned around targeted interventions for citizens who would need support.

Clearly there are significant healthcare opportunities available to us now but I have zero confidence in the current crop of politicians to prevent a Gattaca like future.

Don’t remember that any detail would be helpful.

UK military chiefs have been asked to find £3.5bn in "efficiencies" and other savings this year, even as Sir Keir Starmer says he is readying his armed forces for war, sources have signalled.

One source said the heads of the army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and other top brass were due to meet this week to discuss the funding pressures.

A second source said the squeeze is because the current budget is insufficient simply to deliver the programme of record – let alone ambitions set out in a major review of defence that was published last June to rebuild and rearm in response to escalating threats.

A third source said that the Ministry of Defence – like all government departments – has to operate within the agreed budget set out by the Treasury.

Watch: Defence officials meet to cut military budgets

Defence officials had been holding out for the possibility of more money being made available faster as part of a major, 10-year plan to invest in new equipment and capabilities.

However, the government has still not signed off on the Defence Investment Plan (DIP) – even though it should have been published last autumn.

It means that there is no let-up in the financial squeeze, leading to further demands on military officers and civil servants to look for new ways to cut costs.

People will believe the lies today.

Heard about his back stabbing during the drive to work this morning and couldn’t believe that they didn’t mention this. Surely, for context, you cannot miss that detail?

It’s like most stuff we are hearing at the moment, everybody is lobbying government and trying to force issues with their media influencers. Whether it’s big issues like American Defence companies trying to force us into buying their products instead of investing in our own infrastructure for the future, or energy lobbyists trying to force the government into opening new fields and slow down renewables, it’s not for the good of this country, only for the good of others.

Not many have been better at wasting money than the MoD. Ajax anyone?

Well this is what you get when you have a government thats obsessed with welfare and benefits. Some of this money should be used to defend us but they are too obsessed with benefits street

This welfare bill alone for this year is estimated to be approx 320 billion and 8.4 millions (1 in 8) are now receiving UC.
That is unreal and not sustainable.
This government is a disgrace.

55% of the welfare bill is pensions.

A third of UC claimants are in work.

There are problems for sure but I'd rather we looked after people than going the American route of spending a huge amount on the military.

Politely disagree. It is a forum after all.
But its too skewed the other way.
The Russia issue recently with the underwater cables highlighted our vulnerability. I think a war with Russia is inevitable im the next few years to be honest and we need to be more prepared.
Starmer and Reeves haven't a clue.

Kill the elderly, disabled and children to fund a war. Good idea.

Ridiculous response.
The welfare budget is ridiculous as we have thousands milking the system and a system in parts that means not working is better. How has it come to this?
Absolutely give it to the ones who need it, I'm.not calling everyone out. But hard working people are getting shafted every day by these clowns in charge and its simply unfair. People have had enough.

What exactly would you want the government to do regarding military capability, it can take years for large scale military programmes to deliver, never mind the MoD being absolutely useless with stating requirements.

Let’s not forget that for decades we as a country have culled our military capability so we have a pretty poor starting position.

Honestly i dont know.
All I know is that I do agree that more should be spent on defending us.
We are in avery shit time in the world at the moment and the country is struggling financially. Yet Labour throw money at the welfare state and lift the child benefit cap.
I don't understand some of the decisions they make.

2% of welfare claimants were incorrectly paid to people. Just 2%. You are calling everyone out and say hardworking people are shafted etc, due to the 2%.

98% who are in recipient of welfare got it as they were rightly awarded it.

Again, the majority of the welfare bill is pensions and a third of UC claimants are people in work.

£24 billion set aside for benefits go unclaimed every year. So how is this a system being milked?

Whatever you're reading on facebook, stop as you're sprouting things that aren't actually true.

If your concern was because of the story today by the former NATO chief, he's a paid for lobbyist for American defence contractors.

He wants Britain to buy more American military hardware.

He and American defence companies still want countries to buy hardware built for warfare from another era. As has been shown in Ukraine, drones and lots of them do far more damage than personnel, tanks, planes and missiles and they're a fraction of the cost.

In any case Labour have been in power for less than 2 years and the decrease in our military has been over decades.

Labour have made many mistakes but this can't be laid at the current lots door.

Politely disagree. It is a forum after all. Argyle stated facts, so the only other thing you could disagree with was the military spending aspect.

330 billion forecast this year for welfare alone and yes I know it includes pensions
But this is eye watering.

And more money is being committed, but it takes years to build capability and capacity.

How much have Labour spent over and above that already being paid in Welfare?

Are you saying you’d prefer kids to be in poverty?
