The Labour Government

We do indeed live in rip off Britain but given the overall tax burden and the tax wedge are lower here than in many similar advanced countries, in the round I don't think it's the government that's ripping us off; we need to be looking for the real culprits.

Agree that they’re only a part of the problem.

We live in a low wage/high costs society which just doesn’t add up for the majority.

It's easy to say that but, the UK by GDP, is the worlds 6th largest.
In all metrics that are relevent to the UK as a whole are consitently in the top 10.
This is the product of 2 centrist parties, whether in power or opposition.
Nuff said.
GDP is a distorted way to measure wealth. Even GDP per capita is flawed. Politicians hide behind these figures. The UK is a relatively poor country compared to other developed nations. Even then what wealth we do have is concentrated in a tiny geographical area. Poverty is a huge problem here.

US to review position on sovereignty of Falkland Islands, could that be related to the support for Iran war from Argentina?

And here's me thinking it was the bloody Europeans working over here that were keeping wages low and Brexit would solve it.

Maybe the real culprits are some of the big companies. Take BA for example:

A few years ago they introduced Carrier Imposed Charges. For them, this replaced fuel surcharges that were used when fuel prices were high. However the CIC became a permanent fixture no matter what happened to fuel prices. They hedge fuel and have done so at very low prices over the last few years. The CIC has stayed static. BA are part of IAG that last year made a profit of over 5bn Euros. The share price was at a record high and they carried out a share buy back of 1bn Euros. BA are now part of a group of UK airlines asking for Government, and therefore yours and my support to help subsidise their rising fuel bill.

The biggest telecom companies are also asking for our help despite their in-contract price rises, usually CPI busting. They are suggesting without help they may restrict access and slow down data speeds.Vodafone expect profits this year of 11bn Euros!!!

We need a radical government who is prepared to invest in the population for the betterment of the country and the populous. All I hear is no growth, no growth. Well.... how about making people feel better about life, where they live, opportunities to get on and a feeling the country is being run for the people. Maybe if we achieve that, then growth will follow? It starts with the economics. Surely its time to try something else. The current neo liberal " neo classical economics" model hasn't worked. This inane country economy is akin the household budget claptrap pushed by Thatcher has absolutely hamstrung the national finances.Time for a fresh look at alternatives?

Yes electric cars were invented just as the Iran nonsense kicked off. Also thank god electricity is free from govt taxes ;-)

So if you scroll back, you’ll see the point made was fuel tax is at its lowest. Electric cars were not as prevalent in 2023. You put it down to people using cars less, I’m saying you’re wrong. I’m also not saying electricity isn’t free of tax, it is however free of fuel tax. Winky emoji…

How much fuel duty have you paid?

More thanks to the tax on tax that is VAT applied on top of the fuel duty.

Wrap it up however you want but we are one of the highest taxed countries in the world when it comes to petrol and especially diesel.

I’ve not seen anything that does a country by country comparison. However those driving electric cars don’t pay fuel duty. They do pay VAT on electricity.

Fuel duty has reduced as not all cars need petrol. Can we at least agree on that?
