14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

Is he shagging Pep's daughter?

I'm scratching my head in trying to think of reasons baby Rodders doesn't get many games. Hopefully get a couple so the real one is fighting fit for the run in.
Because we have Rodri Bernardo and will for the run in.This is the run in so doubt he get any games, unless we rotate a bit for the last 5 games in the last 2 weeks.

Is he the unluckiest player in recent history? Absolutely indispensable pre Christmas, putting in massive performances. Then permanently absent, then comes up with this today, but we know he's probably not going to feature much again if rodri and Nico O are fit.

Must be so frustrating for the lad
Very - couldn't blame him if he wanted out, same as Trafford.
Think it'd be a mistake on our part, but he shouldn't be warming the bench permanently

Quietly took control. From the start, I've thought he should play alongside Rodri, when Rod's available. Not instead. And he's a player who has got better since he got here. And will get better still. Of course, he's no Fern, he's no Rodri. We know that.
Instead of Bernardo? No chance. He can play alongside Rodri but it won't be a first choice pairing, peps going to go with Bernardo, or kovacic in his absence. Too similar in attributes they are providing the team to be a preferred pairing. If those 2 are starting together you probably need to change the system a bit and add a third central midfielder to compliment them.

You haven't understood me. I'm talking about next season (and possibly beyond), where Bernardo will no longer be an option. What I meant by “from the start” was “from the start I was thinking that when Bernardo inevitably leaves…”. If I had my way, Bernardo would stay until he was on crutches. If Rod renews I can certainly see Nico G playing alongside him. He's certainly adaptable enough to do so. Kova? Much as I admired him rolling back the years on Saturday, he's not a long- or even medium-term option.
If both Rod and Bernardo go, same season, i.e. this summer, we've got a problem.

Apart from the MATCH WINNING ROCKET he was shit, yeah? That's the script? What a pile of bollocks. He's a very good player who can end up great. Happy he scored a fucking banger and celebrated loudly in The Dispensary in Liverpool. Gwan Nico! Up the Blues!

We have a problem indeed replacing Bernardo never mind Rod going

Excellent today but he has to move the ball faster and more forward. He’s so good when he does
Funny I focused a bit on him Saturday. At one point I counted 14 consecutive passes forward. But agendas are just that, basically nonsense...

Made a major mistake in possession within minutes of coming on last night to concede a counter attack.
Then pep was screaming at him for missing an obvious forward passing option to go backwards.
Don't be a fucktard. It's not necessary...

UFB!

He was tasked with being third CB mopping up the middle, so both FBs could play as wingers…and you’re talking about his “creativity and drive”??

He was the metronome that kept the possession ticking over for the so-called “creative players.”

That is an agenda driven opinion…imho.
Of course it's an agenda. Some "opinions" on here are basically fucktard agendas...

Didn't do much apart from the goal. Certainly lacking in creativity and drive. I'd really like to see him do well but I don't think he's got the speed of thought at this level.
I think a lot of this comes down to the standards set by Rodri and Fernandinho. When you've had players of that level in that role, it skews expectations a bit.

That said, I do think he's being judged a bit harshly. There have been some really strong performances this season - Newcastle away in the FA Cup, Liverpool at home, Real Madrid away. Those aren’t easy games to impose yourself in, and he did. He's the kind of player who reads danger early and quietly snuffs things out, which doesn't always stand out but is hugely valuable.

The criticism about him playing sideways doesn't quite land for me either. He does recycle possession when it's needed, but he also carries the ball through the middle and breaks lines more often than he gets credit for. Not every pass has to be high risk, and sometimes keeping control is the job that's essential. When you look at his stats, his forward and progressive passes % are very impressive. The statistics don't suggest to me he's a sideways passer.

When he came on against Burnley, we looked a lot more settled defensively and regained some structure, which says a lot. And alongside Kovacic against Southampton, I thought he was excellent - especially that second half, where he really grew into the game.
He might not be Rodri or Fernandinho, but that doesn't mean he isn't doing a very good job in his own right. People forget that he's only 24 years old. He's been under utilised at times this season.
