Pep to leave at the end of the season

I’m not seeing this “keeping the chair warm” theory.

Yes it looks like we did that with Pellegrini. We were a different club then, we were building and we had the greatest coach ever coming in.

We’re now established as one of the biggest clubs on the planet. 15 years of success. The last 5 or so being up there with any club, ever. We’re built. We now need to sustain that.

We cant gamble on any coach who might do ok on the basis that an Enrique or Kompany comes through the door in 2-3 years and they go onto “do a Pep”.

We cant risk 2-3 seasons of no CL. 2-3 seasons of no Pl title. 2-3 seasons of Arsenal, the dippers or god forbid, the scum, pulling away and becoming dominant. From a sporting perspective but also from a business and optics perspective.

I cannot believe that the men running this club will sanction a succession plan that consists of a bang average coach with limited success coming in and keeping the chair warm whilst we wait for the next proper coach. It doesn’t sound very 2026 City. In fact it sounds ridiculous.

If Pep is going, the next guy needs to be the guy and he needs to be the long term guy.
Agree, and I have made this point in various ways. If it Does end up being Maresca, then imo the club think he is the guy.

Maresca trained by Pep, plays similar systems to Pep, has dealt with overpaid self indulgent players, not what seems to be our more level headed players with no egos, knows the club inside out, highly spoken of by chelsea squad.

On paper it seems like a sensible idea for a smooth continuation, and only the media and ourselves could derail it with negativity from the off.
Whilst I don't disagree with the premise of the post its a bit far fetched to say he was "trained by Pep"

He was appointed manager of the EDS in August 2020 winning the PL2 he left in May 21 (10 months) for the head coach role at Parma only to be sacked in November 21 In June 22 he returned to City as one of Pep's assistant manager's for one season leaving for Leicester in June 23 (12 months)

I agree that the fans need to get behind any decision that the club make for Pep's successor there will be more than enough outside pressure for whoever to fail

Hear, hear. And hopefully he will bring Willy Cabalero as assistant manager.
I would expect whoever takes over then they will have to accept the current team at least the ones who remain It seems strange that Pep Linjders was hired for a year

Didn't Bayern gamble on Kompany
Not really mate. He got relegated with a squad every manager on the planet would’ve got relegated with. But, you could see what he was trying to do. You could see his coaching level. He just didn’t have the players to execute it. You could see his drive, character, standards and will to win. For me, Vinny presented as too big for the job.

Maresca had an extremely expensive squad packed with the best young players around, yet I could never see what his philosophy was. He seemed unable to know his best 11 and stick with it. His in game management was poor, often making bizarre substitutions or waiting far too long to make any. With the squad and infrastructure at Chelsea he should have done much, much better. In contrast to Vinny, for me, he appeared too “small” for the role.

I thought the substitution issue was dictated by the backroom and medical staff and part of the reason he left Chelsea. But yes, I would prefer Vinny.

Never mind me telling you to mute me if you think I'm acting like a melt, I'm gonna have to mute you if you're in this sort of mood for the next three years. Lighten up a bit and have a bit of hope for the future, man!
Come on mate I’m not going to mute you and would hope you wouldn’t mute me!

I can’t be lighthearted about the most important decision regarding my club’s future. I’m desperate for it to go as well as possible when Pep finally hangs up his whistle.

It’s does sound ridiculous mate. Reading your post made it sound nothing like city 2026. Maybe when khaldoon took control of the club, you could argue some mistakes were made and a few fuck ups since then but on the pitch it’s been near perfect. Actually it has probably been better than perfect.

So why can’t we plan succession? Do we have that little faith in the owner? I expect a top appointment after pep but in the back of my head they might want a coach who could become pep instead of a person who is now? Bit like how we recruit. Mostly buy good players with wc potential.

I don’t know, it’s sounds insane but maybe it’s actually true. Still think it’s ridiculous.
It may well be true mate! I just hope it isn’t.

He was at city for about 5 minutes and trained the kids. Pep will have had very minimal input with him, mate.

Had a look around the Chelsea forums and their views on Maresca, it's a very mixed response.
Talked up a bit more since he's left as he was obviously better than Rosenior but still a load of negative stuff about him

Not sure where you’ve heard that from mate?. Of course, the other staff would have input (as they would at any club) but I’m struggling to accept they were “dictating” decision making to him.

Every manager has flaws!

Pep subbing some say are late but I won’t question pep to why Because he knows more than anyone!

99% of Man City fans would rather have Kompany, looks like he is staying at Bayern!

We just got to wait if Pep is going, then if it’s Maresca let’s see how he managers a top winning team! Said before any new manager with this squad HAVE to compete for every trophy to the end of a season, we see That in his or any new manager first 18/24months the 3rd year he has to win trophies if not the club will sack whoever it is, I believe..

If Pep is off, I wonder when they announce it? I’m going post FA Cup Final, reckon they won’t want a a whole month of external noise leading into the final games but they’ll obvs have to announce ahead of Villa and the potential North Stand opening.

Without trying to sound too doom and gloom (nothing official yet) I think losing Pep and Bernie in the same summer, in a WC year, would be catastrophic for us. I’d probably recalibrate my expectations for next season based off that. The new coach just isn’t going to have the time and you get the impression this could be a busy window (ins, outs, renewals) You are losing arguably the two most important guys in the changing room. Factor in other experienced guys could be leaving too, Stones definitely is, Ake probably is.

The managerial churn would be far more ideal next summer, pain in the arse really.

Got to trust the powers that be on this but can’t say I’m ecstatic about it to be honest. Maybe they want the continuity of style that Maresca knows? Or maybe even Pep has recommended Enzo? Chelsea is a complete basket case isn’t it and we have such an amazing infrastructure that he may actually thrive here but it won’t be to Pep levels! Would say Alonso or Fabregas actually be any better choice? We may have even approached Enrique and Vinny and they said no?

They did but it was to do with players coming back from injury, they put the lead medical person on the bench to make sure Maresca didn't burn them out, told Maresca when to take them off etc

Daily Mail hmmmmmm.

But, if that is true, I’d find it extremely worrying that the club felt the need to do so, as Maresca was making such a bollocks of things.

Another red flag imo.

Yeah and he never ever interacted with him apart from this, Maresca has called him his inspiration and mentor, many young coaches have visited Pep and spent time learning his methods without directly working full time with him for years
