Pep to leave at the end of the season

I think Maresca is the safe pick.

Like most of you here, when I first heard his name, I was kind of "whelmed" by the news, kind of meh. But the more I think about it, the more sense it makes.

He was a crucial assistant for Pep during the treble season and was the EDS manager in 2020. So he knows the club, he knows the culture, and how the club functions, so there won't be a ton of changes that upset everyone and cause issues. Guys like Haaland, Rodri, Dias, Phil. Know him and know how he works.

I think if the goal is to continue Pep's style and his ethos Enzo is a guy who worked under him, was influenced by him and has worked with core members of the squad, and knows what he is stepping into.

There are a lot of questions, though. Can he develop players the way Pep did? He did some solid work at Chelsea, particularly with Caicedo, who seemed to get a lot better when Maresca came in, but Cole's numbers did dip.

Chelsea is a mess. I wouldn't hold any manager accountable for some of the decisions made and the mess BlueCo has created there, and while it wasn't perfect when he was there, it got a lot worse when he left.

Palmer was top scorer in Maresca’s only full season. It was Palmers best spell. Edit that, his first season was better under Poch. Still not bad though, and in my opinion more his true level than his first year numbers.

Why is Maresca “high” among candidates we are looking at and not other managers?
That’s simple, because those at the top probably Pep included think he is the best available option to carry on the rebuild Pep has started. He may be he may not guess we’ll see.

Maybe because we don't want to wreck the system by going from *cough* GPC to Moyes *cough*

But instead we want a successful continuity like the dippers had all those years ago with Shankly -> Paisley -> Fagan -> Daglish
(manager to assistant or manager to player)

It's also what Brokelona did.. (Pep -> Tito) and it worked out well for them with a 100 point season.

Right, after a long think about this I've realised that my issue is mainly that he's bald and that I actually don't really know much about him.

So I'll take it upon myself to do a bit of research and find out why this is our guy and seemingly has been for a good while.

Edit:

30 seconds in and I stumble on this:

Pep could never

But why is Maresca the only manager to be high and not any other manager?
I remember when Girona had that amazing season, there were stories coming out that their manager Michel had been earmarked to take over from Pep when he left.

The club clearly have candidates in mind well ahead of time and if the names that crop up tend to be the likes of Michel or Maresca and not the likes of Enrique or Klopp then I imagine they think managers close to the City football group would be more likely to slot in more seamlessly than a bigger name who has no affiliation.

Maybe he is? I've looked into it and before City announced the 2 year extension, multiple journalists who put the news out that Pep had agreed an extension said that the contract was 1 year with the option of a second.

So if that's true that would just mean he's not taking up the option of doing another year.

I think you are looking to try find reasons to justify the rumours.

Convincing Pep to do one more year and then Enrique is the perfect scenario but doesn’t look like it’s happening.
Based on what? As things stand, that's the default, snd no convincing may even be needed.

I am lukewarm with the news on Maresca taking over from Pep; but to be honest it is either this season or next in that he would would call it a day at City And some aspects I can see where the club is coming from in terms of his appointment. Either Kompany, Enrique and to some extent Flick would be ideal picks but they are settled at their current club. Still hope Pep stays at least for one more season and see out the rebuilding stage.

I don’t know who knows what or when they knew but I would guess those at the top have known for while. If we are to believe the rumours Maresca was being spoken about,(and to ?) before he left Chelsea back in December. In which case Semenyo,Guehi and their agents, plus Anderson if again rumours are true would all be well aware Peps time was short and Maresca was favourite to replace him.

Doesn’t mean he’s as good a manager as Emery, Klopp, etc though.
