47 | Phil Foden - 2025/26

I think missing out on the World Cup would be another hit to his confidence.

Best case scenario is probably the most likely, he goes but plays a very small part, doesn’t have loads of expectations on his shoulders and hopefully he has a good game or two.

Tuchel clearly rates him very highly and has confidence in him which can only be a good thing.
I don't think he deserves to go though, WC is the pinnacle only those in form should go. His form has dropped off a cliff.

Maybe he is struggling with so many changes to the team?

Either way he needs to get a reset of sorts. Stop playing with his back to goal would be a great start.

But going to tournaments before has been what has shot his confidence before, I think.

May be wrong, but I always feel that Bellingham's presence has an effect upon Phil, on and off the pitch.

No concrete grounds for that, just a feeling.

Might be different if he goes this time - Tuchel doesn't seem to be a Bellingham fanboy.
I've always maintained this about Bellingham and his side kick Tront in relation to Phil. Like you, no tangible evidence, just an intuitive feeling.

I dont think he deserves to go to the WC and I don't think he should go.

Whatever hit to his confidence he takes for not going should be better served recovering, spending time with his family, and figuring out what's going on.

I feel going to the WC would be a massive distraction to what is a good time for him to slow down and plan his next steps.

Interesting, and good to hear.

Fantastic news.

He's not right physically behind the scenes, or mentally. It'll come out eventually. I've heard everything from IBD to hypochondria to full-on depression. It's possibly all three. But regardless of what it actually is the other players are worried about him and the club need to do right by him.

What I really want City to do - and I've said this before on here - is give Phil a nice big contract for 4-5 years, tell him he can take next season off to get himself right again, and let him know we've got his back throughout. There is room for sentimentality in football and our Phil deserves some.

Not his best time in a city shirt but he has been a major contributor in the pep era. He should be given a new deal and hopefully the chance to learn and put this time behind him. We give contracts to players not fit to lace Fodens boots.

There is a duty of care but a whole season off would be a stretch :-)

There are rumours everywhere illness, depression, huge family issues. Its all just guesswork.

Phil should get say a two year extension but no pay rise? I get he’s one of our own but the new two year deal would give him three years total on his contract and a chance to sort out whatever is going on with him. Doesn’t deserve a pay rise for the sake of it though imo.

TBH I think everyone wants to give him an extension, the pay rise is the point of contention and like others have said I don't think Phil is in a position to demand 300K a week right now.

How I would structure it would be renew on same terms, but include a clause where his pay goes up if certain on pitch targets are met. Give him the potential to earn huge bonuses if he rediscovers form.

Needs to go out on loan.
There's nowhere better for Phil than City right now. It's about so much more than him just not looking right on a football pitch, it's his home life and his health that are causing him problems. This is part of why Dele Alli went the way he did - Spurs cast him out and sent him somewhere else, just at the time when he needed an arm round him. Aymeric and Pep have both come out this week and said that there's no club in the world that looks after its players and staff like City do, and we absolutely don't want to send Phil to a club where the standards of staff care aren't so high.

EDIT: Didn't realise @Gaylord du Bois was mocking those who suggest he should go out on loan, as opposed to supporting the idea!

If he goes out of firm then it’s not fair on players who have performed all season only to get dropped in favour of a player who may produce . Nowhere near good enough to go atm .
