14 | Nico Gonzalez - 2025/26

How Can u blame him, had no help next to him as Bernardo decided to stay up top behind Haaland. Our Defense was a disaster show, O‘Reily was also up front. Guehi Nunes and Khusanov all had a bad night. And he is the one who barely touched gras last months.

Still convinced he will be our Rodri replacement

I thought he had a good first half, but was struggling with the lack of control in the second half, he's young he'll get there.
I thought the complaints about him last night on the match day forum were unnecessary and unjustified. As you say he played well in the first half but struggled a bit in the second - he certainly wasn’t on his own in that regard.

He is a brilliant young player and imo has a bright future with us. Every time he comes on he is replacing Rodri and is therefore immediately under the microscope. He is not Rodri but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a great player.

Get off his back and support him. Like it or not he is likely to be Rodri’s long-term replacement.

We will be in trouble if he is Mate as he is not at his level will never will . Good player and has a good shot but will not be our main midfielder.

His performances yesterday proved to me that maybe Pep was right to bench him all this time. He’s just not ready but who was … nobody we’ve bought besides Haaland recently hit the ground running

When he came off we became worse even tho he didn’t play well. We had zero physicality and went back to get over run, Bernardo and Kovatic got bullied. We have to fix this midfield, put as much money in this. Go back to our formula.

Not a prayer.

We will sign at least one CM in the summer and not squad purchases like Gonzales was. By the time next season rolls around, Gonzales will be lucky if he hasn’t got 3 people in front of him in the pecking order. If that transpires, he is done at City.

He will never have a better chance to prove himself than he had earlier this season. He did ok in what was a complete mess of a midfield at the time but he clearly didn’t impress Pep too much because he has disappeared. Not quite to Rico Lewis levels but not that far behind. We have already seen that not too many players come back from that with Pep.

Somewhat agree. Nico is young and may improve - perhaps by a lot.

From a squad perspective, going into next year: Rodri may leave. B. Silva will definitely leave. Kova will likely leave. We're likely to sign E. Anderson. But given the departures, I think that Gonzalez will be a valuable backup at CM.

What makes you think that ?
Mainly because you said he lacks drive. That's a very harsh assessment and not something any player would want associated with them. He has areas that need improving but saying he lacks drive is basically saying he's shit.

Bit harsh to be giving the lad pelters when he doesn't have much recent game time under his belt. I understand him being benched for Rodders, but the big man going down again has just thrust the lad into the middle of a porous midfield and he's expected to do a job as well as the best in the world in his position. They pressed and kicked fuck out of us and to be honest, most of our lot couldn't handle it at times, not just Nico.

Nico is never going to be a direct replacement for Rodri. There's not many who can and this is going to be a problem moving forward
So maybe we have to be smarter with the balance in midfield. Rather than a 6, have 2 hybrid 6 / 8s

Seems to me like a decent player, but we need better than that.
He is a player you can play at home against bottom half teams
Away from home, against a low block, when we need it most he was average.
That was his chance. I’m not sure he gets another one

I honestly think if viana can get Anderson and one of Enzo/Tonali (both possible but not cheap) In the summer then he’ll go

If Rodri leaves, we're probably going to sign Tonali but that would mean Gonzalez would be a backup again. I feel bad for him, I think he's a good player. Really hope we can keep him, even if he's just a backup.

Yes, fair comment.
I phrased it poorly. It wasn't intended to criticise lack of effort. Certainly would like to see him turn into the quality player we require in that role. But I have my doubts.

'Brilliant' come on! If Spain picked a squad of 100 players he wouldn't be anywhere near it!
