Enzo Maresca

Assuming pep does go and is replaced by Maresca - what is the barometer of success ?

Personally I’d take any trophy and CL place as a success right now.., and build from there

Honestly believe if pep had one more season we’d walk the league next year - this season has been piss poor - city of old would have wrapped it up by March
The clubs ambition, regardless of who the manager, is to be the best in the world.
Maresca will of course, like any other manager we would appoint, be expected to win right away.

We should absolutely not lower our standards and pretend that what was previously considered a failure to now be a success. The club has won before Pep joined and Barcelona and Bayern both won the league after he left. No reason to why we should expect us to be worse, if anything we should expect a busy summer on the transfer market that will make us better.

Fans of various clubs, not just the red shirts.
I hope he proves them all wrong and does a brilliant job at City

Apart from Louis Enrique there aren’t a lot of managers near Pep’s level knocking about. It’s telling that Real Madrid have had to go appoint a dinosaur like Mourinho. The club has seen Maresca work first hand I trust their opinion over some numpty football supporters who have been traumatised by Pep so are rejoicing he’s gone.

We will be alot more defensive next season if he comes in, he's still an Italian coach and still believes in 90 percent defence 10 percent attack. He does have similar principles to Pep, but he still has that Italian idea on defensive shape, he plays with two CDMs

So we'll need to buy two. Rodri sadly looks a shadow of himself. Bernie's off and Kovacic can't defend.
Can he get a tune out of Gonzalez, will he move Nico. And Reinjders?

My guess is we will sign Elliott Anderson and if Rodri leaves for Madrid , we will go for Tonali or Enzo Fernandez. Otherwise I think Maresca will play a double pivot of Anderson and Rodri.

One thing I hope Maresca does is get Haaland involved more in the game. He’s got a genuine eye for a pass when he’s asked to drop deeper and link up play - two last night alone for Semenyo and then for NOR.

He’s too good to be sat there waiting for crosses all game/season with a few games thrown in every 6 months where he’s asked to do more.

Initially underwhelmed, but I think you have to look at this one as a Vinny type appointment in the sense that maybe he just needs the right environment to thrive. Obviously Chelsea is its own shitshow and Leicester were sinking faster than the titanic at the time. Lets see.

To be fair, Vinny has taken over a club that has completely dominated German football for a while. It would be harder not to look like you're thriving in the German league looking after Bayern. Jury is still out on whether he would cut it in a more competitive league. Tough ask keeping Burnley up but he showed no adaptability that season.

It'll be a tougher ask for Maresca to look like he is thriving, simply based on the fact its a far more competitive league but one thing is for sure, he will have a far more stable club behind him at City and will be given every opportunity to showcase how good he is or isn't, without being surrounded by a complete shit show.

That's the beauty of a stable environment like city, it simply comes down to your ability. If you're great, you'll achieve greatness here.

For those that have followed Maresca semi-closely;

What I am reallh interested to know is how he utilised Delap in our youth team, and Vardy at Leicester. Two strikers that have similiarities in their game to our world-class goalscorer. Did he use them like chess-pieces that would score like Pep does Haaland or does he play to tveir strenghts

Can only comment on Vardy as my brother is a Leicester fan but according to him. He used Vardy to drop deep hold the ball up and spread it to the wings, he would still have Vardy press but sparingly due to injury concerns and age.

Instead of having Vardy running in behind he’d have Vardy drop deep create space for the wingers and then Vardy would be told to get in the box to finish off a move. Wingers were key to his system. My brother said it was like their own version of Sane , Sterling and Aguero. He loved watching it every week.

If he got Leicester playing like this I wonder what he could do with the players we have

He's coming into a much better set up at City than he inherited at Leicester or Chelsea and he did a good job at both of them. Plus he's coming back into a system he's familiar with (AKA: he knows the club - sorry!).

At Chelsea he inherited an enormous squad and had to be ruthless with a lot of them - including Raheem Sterling whom he knew very well from his time at City, and who was put right out in the cold. I take it from that action that he's not afraid to make the difficult choices which are required and I look forward to seeing what he identifies as the deadwood he doesn't want to deal with in the future.

Interesting times ahead for us all.

Good, League titles and Champions leagues are generally won by clubs with excellent defences, it will make a nice change if we dont knock it around thd back 4 until the opposition get 11 men behind the ball.

Watching the video a few posts above about his tactics I did find myself thinking those long keeper passes to beat a press and stepping in beside the centre back are more Trafford than Donnarumma, and as you say the sidelining of his ‘bomb’ squad shows he’s brave and confident enough to make hard decisions. You’re right it will be interesting.
