England World Cup 2026 Squad | Trafford, Stones, Guehi & Nico in

I think Tuchel's done exactly what he needed to.

He's doing what a club manager would do - implementing a style of football and picking the best players to play it. If Kane is injured, like it or not, Toney is the most similar in terms of dropping deeper to play that ball in behind. If Saka is injured Madueke is similar if not as good. If Rashford/Gordon are injured same for them replacing one another.

I would have considered Palmer only because you do need something different and I think Watkins and Palmer give you that.

Maguire might have been worthy based on form, but has shown his character with his outburst so it's clearly the right call and he's fucked any chance of covering for someone if they get injured. There was one further player Tuchel said would go in to cover alongside the three mentioned - wondering if Colwill will be that player. If he'd had a longer run since recovering from injury he'd be there ahead of Quansah.

Someone posted his stats a month or so ago and I was shocked at how good they were to be fair to him. I'd rather him in a squad than Mainoo who shouldn't be anywhere near the squad.
well I've always thought Henderson isn't a bad player. My comment is more aimed at the fact the lack of depth we have that he can still make the squad, when you consider the narrative we are producing so many good young players, apparently.

I wouldn't have mainoo either. He has extremely poor positional awareness. I think he was always a big reason teams used to stroll through the rag midfield. That's why their previous manager dropped him but they were still shit.

Yeah he's had an upturn in form during Carrick's honeymoon period, but anything is an upturn in form compared to getting splinters on your arse on the bench. That certainly doesn't mean he can cut it against a proper team and midfield at the world cup.

Very disappointing squad selection. Disappointed for Phil and he will be devastated, but he will benefit in the long run, with a summer of rest and recuperation. No Palmer & Morgan Gibbs-White does surprise me.

Spence, Burn, J Henderson, Mainoo, Madueke, Quansah and the biggest joke of all, Toney, should be nowhere near this squad.

I’d even say John Stones is fortunate, but we know if he’s fit, he’s class.
Rashford, has performed well for Barca, so I can understand his inclusion

But the stupid cunts have also given him a new contract - commensurate with being an international player no doubt!

So good to see that the fuckers have learned nothing about their true status !

There's a balance needed in squads that are away for week like at the WC though.

Henderson knows he won't be starting and possibly will only get a few minutes here and there if we are trying to see out a game. Because of that, he needs to be someone who accepts that, isn't going to kick up a fuss about not playing and is a good influence on the others.

Tuchel clearly thinks he fits the bill because of that. It's possibly a very similar reason why Maguire is out, and also quite possible he thinks Phil would be moping a little if not involved much.

You can only play 11 and there will be about 17-18 players that actually get on the pitch throughout the World Cup unless injuries hit, in which case we're fucked anyway.

Look at City and think, would you rather a young player with a lot of talent but little experience or would you want an experienced head, someone you know will be positive whether they play or not. Someone who might disrupt things when they don't get picked. I think it's as simple as that. You don't want a situation like England had with Ben White where someone kicks off about having to put work in when they aren't playing and then goes home. You want someone who will be committed and positive even when they know they're sitting on a bench all summer.

If Mainoo played for Brighton or anyone other than utd he would NOT be anywhere near the international setup.

Mainoo aint the problem with that squad selection. If England are a few goals up and they want to give the others a rest, he can be a safe option to keep the ball and play it simple for the last 20 minutes.

Spence instead of Lewis Hall???
Henderson instead of Gibbs-White or Wharton???
Quansah and Burn instead of Slabhead???
Madueke getting the nod over Palmer and Foden???
Ivan Toney basically retired last summer.

It's not one bad or controversial decision, there's about 6 he got completely wrong.

Henderson is one of the older heads, he's there to help give the younger ones the focus and stuff.

Not sure about the others. But we'll see.
