Has he not noticed the that consecutive governments have brought forward legislation to decrease immigration. Why would a Labour Party member come out with that kind of talk when his party have proved that the system is now tougher on immigration?

Brown just extended what Lamont started in 1994. If I remember rightly schemes were prevented from going too far into surplus. My scheme actually took a pensions "holiday" for 3 years for which we union "lefties" negotiated an improvement to the accrual rate for everyone in the scheme. We went from 40/60 to 40/58 to be fully paid up. The scheme was well managed and only briefly went into deficit. Brown's action was certainly detrimental to DB schemes but it was in no way the only reason they became a rarity.

I'm not sure why you get so angry and name calling when someone dares to have a debate with you or points out that your statements are inaccurate.

Because he recognises we need to go further and faster to get us in the right place on immigration.

Labour have done great things so far, but I think simply not doing a Boriswave has helped in that respect. When the previous guys were bringing in nearly a million net a year at one point it would be very difficult not to improve on that.

By GE2029 we could be at net zero on immigration, or even have negative migration. That should take the wind out of Reform’s sails.

I doubt he means it. He's saying what he can to curry favour with the local populous of Makerfield which, given it voted leave with a majority of 267,000 in 2016, means Burnham knows he needs to play to the crowd.

I disagreed at the time that we had no answer on the doorstep. We needed oeople to pick and pack food, work in care, drive buses, etc but I could cite too all the entrepreneurial energy of immigrants. But that was with largely EU young people coming and then leaving (under FoM), not the one-way traffic after Brexit.

But no, he's not just "currying favour" (and certainly not with lefties who don't like the 20 years for a right to remain proposal).
